ATENT EDWARD W. HANAUER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO GERSON DANNENBERG, OF SAME PLACE.
STAY FOR TROUSERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 671,191, dated April 2, 1901.
Application filed September 8, 1900.
To aZZ whom it may concern: H
Be it known that I, EDWARD W. HANAUER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelpl1ia,State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stays for Trousers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of an improvement in stays for trousers, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Figure 1 represents a plan View of a blank from which the stay embodying my invention is formed, illustrating also the manner of cutting the same. Fig. 2 represents a plan of the said bottom stay. Fig. 3 represents a fragmentary view of the bottom portion of the trousers. Fig. 4 represents a sectional view of the same, taken on the line a: 00.
Similar letters of reference indicate correzo sponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a portion of a leg of a pair of trousers, and B the bottom turn-up thereof.
0 designates a stay formed, as usual, of a 2 5 gummy piece that is inserted between the bottom portion and the turn-up of the trousers and which by adhering thereto holds the turn-up in position, thus obviating sewing the same. This gummy piece may consist of a piece of gutta-percha,rubber, canvas, or other material or fabric and is caused to adhere to the trousers and turn-up usually by the application of a hot iron to the outside thereof after the stay has been inserted therebetween.
5 The upper edge portion of said piece is continuous, as at G, and adapted to extend along the upper edge of the turn-up B and the lower portion of said stay is serrated or broken, forming a series of depending tongues Serial No. 91360- (No specimens.)
D, which are separated by the intervening spaces E.
It will be seen that when the stay is secured to the turn-up and the adjacent portion of the leg of the trousers said turn-u p is strengthened and sustained, as is also the adjacent bottom portion of the leg of the trousers, but owing to the spaces E or breaks in the lengths of the stay the bottom of the trousers is rendered somewhat pliable, avoiding a stiff appearance and caused to hang 5o naturally and softly over the shoes of the wearer, while also preventing rapid wearing out of the lower edge of the leg. There is also economy in the manufacture of the stays in that a serrated or serpentine cut is made in a strip of material and the edges of said out are common to two stays, as shown in Fig. 1.
By this methodof manufacture I am en abled to make a pair of stays from, say, a two-inch strip of material, each member of the pair being an inch and a half wide, there being thus much saving in material and expense.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A garment provided with a bottom stay consisting of apiece of gum my material having a broken lower edge, said stay being situ- 7o ated between the bottom portion of the garment and the turn-up thereof and adhesively secured to the inner faces thereof.
EDWARD W. HANAUER.
