TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, HIRAM WHITNEY, of Watertown, Middlesex county, Massachusetts, have invented-a new and useful Improvement in Paper Neck-Ties; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art tomake and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specificationv The present invention relates to the manufacture of neck-ties from paper, and consists, rst', in providing a neck-tie made from paper, with an extension piece upon its upper side or edge, and an under-folded piece upon its lower edge, with a button-hole in the same, by means of which two pieces the neck-tie can be secured to and upon the front button of the shirt, and with its extension-piece under the turned-over portions of the ollar. And this invention still further consists in a novel manner of constructing the neck-tie to'more resemble the ordinary and common woollen neck-ties. In the accompanying plate of drawings my improved paper neck-ties are illustrated Figures 1 and 2 being front views of neck-ties of different styles, iiattened, or with its several portions laid out.
Figures 3 and 4, views showing` my improved construction of neck-ties from paper.
A, in the drawings, gs. 1 and 2, represents a neck-tie made of one piece of paper markedo` to indicate and resemble a knot or bow of the ordinary forms of woollen neck-ties. B, an extension-piece or upper side of neck-tie A, madeoi` a suitable shape to fit under the'turned-over portions of a collar. C, a piece at centre of lower edge of neck-tie, in which a button-hole, D, is made, this piece C being folded under and back of the centre portion of the neck-tie, when upon the neck, and being provided for buttoning the tie to the front button of the shirt. In gs. 3 and 4 the neck-tie is shown as made in two parts, E and F, the one, E, being formed with side wings G and button-hole piece H, for the same purposes as the extension and button-hole pieces referred to above, and shown in figs. 1 and 2, and with `vertical slits I, through which the part F, folded as shown in iig. 4, is to be passed to produce lthe ends to the tie.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The paper neck-tie constructed as described, consisting of the part E provided with the parallel transverse slits I to receive the folded part or ends of the tie F, the button-hole piece H upon the lower side adapted to' be turned back against the part E, as herein set forth for the purpose specified.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 20th day of'February, 1867.
