Description
BUTLER R'PLATT AND JOSEPH A. GRAY, 0F HOLLAND, MICHIGAN.
Leners Parent N... 67,069, dared .my 23,1867.
MPROVED WASHING MACHINE.
lO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: l
Be it known thatwe, BUTLER R. PLATE and JOSEPH A. GRAY, of Holland, in the county of Ottawa, and State of Michigan, have invented a new `and improved Washing Machine; and we do hereby declare that the followingis a. full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable 'those skilled in the art to make und use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which-- Figure -1 is a vertical longitudinal section of our improved machine taken through-the line a: zur, iig? 2.
Figure 2 is a vertical cross-section of the same, taken through the line y y, iig. 1. Similar letters of reference indicatecorresponding parts. Our invention has for its object to furnish an improved machine, by means of which the clothes may be washed quickly and thoroughly, and which may be easily adjusted to wash coarse or fine clothes; and it consists in the double concave Vreversible roller-frame, in combination with the hinged frame and with the box or tub, the whole being constructed and arranged as hereinafter more fully described.
A is the box or tub, which is made rectangular in" form, and which is supported upon legs B, of convenient height. C is the cylinder, the surface of which is luted or grooved longitudinally, as shown in the drawings. The cylinder C is pivoted to the sides of the tub, and is revolved by means of the'crank D attached to the projecting end of its axle. E is a vertical partition, placed in the rear ci' the cylinder C, and which divides the tub or box into two unequal compartments. F is a frame, the Bide bars of which are connected at theirends by the cross-bars f', the front one of which may be used as a handle in raising and lowering the frame. The rear endsvof the side'bars of the frame F are hinged to the upper edges of the side boards of the tub or box A. G is the reversible roller-frame, which is pivoted to the frame F by a. shaft, gl, passing through its centre. The l edges of the side bars of the frame G are cut out, as shown in iig. 1, so that their curve may correspond with the arc ofthe cylinder. g2 are rollers, the ends ofrwhich are pivoted to the side bars of the frame G, along the curved edges of said bars, the rollers uponone side being considerably larger than those upon 'the other, as shown in iig. 1. By this construction the roller-frame may be reversed, so that the larger rollers may be used in washing the co'arser clothes, and the smaller ones for washing'the finer articles. p
In using the machine, the hinged frame F isfraised, the article to be washed is placed upon the cylinder C, andthe roller-frame G lowered upon it. The cylinder C is then revolved, the necessary pressure being obtained by bearing down upon the, frame F withl one hand. while the other is employed iu operating the crank, so that each article may be rubbed much or little, as maybe necessary.
Olaz'm,
4 We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The double concave reversible roller-frame Gr, constructed as described, in combination with the hinged frame F, and with the box or tub A, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
The above specification of our invention signed by us this 24th day of April, 1867.
B. R. PLATT, J. A. GRAY.
