Description
llNrrED STATES EEICE.
ETENr GOLF-CLU B.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 669,864, dated March 12, 1901.
Application filed July 26, 1900. Serial No. 24,931. lNo model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER SIMPSON, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Golf Club House, Maidenhead, in the county of Berks, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Golf-Clubs, of which the following is a specifica-tion.
My invention relates to a method of attaching the blades of golf-clubs to the shafts and to a form of blade which renders the club a more effective instrument.
rlhe blade is formed with a socket at one side which projects from its face, so that it lies entirely in front of the blade. The socket and blade are of course formed in one piece. The socket is of square form and the end of the shaft is shaped correspondingly, the passage of the socket tapering toward the bottom and extending completely through it. The shaft is secured in place by a pin passing through the socket from side to side.
In order that this invention may be more clearly understood, reference is had to the accompanying sheet of drawings, in Which- Figure l is a face View of a blade formed according to my invention, and Fig. 2 is a plan.
A is the blade of the usual form and with scored surface to give a proper grip on the ball. At one side of the blade is a metal socket B in one piece with it. rlhis socket, which, as
shown,is very short, is entirely in front of the blade. The socket is of square form and ta pers toward the bottom, so that the passage extending through it is of greater width at the top. The shaft C tits tightly into the socket, and the pin D, which extends through it from side to side, retains it securely in place. As the socket can be made very short when in this form, the blade can carry additional weight,so that practically all the weight of the club lies directly behind the ball, giving greater power and precision of stroke. The shaft and socket are also in a straight line from top to bottom, and the blade lies behind the shaft, allowing its face to be seen in hitting, which constitutes a considerable advantage.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The improved construction of golf-clubs comprising the blade A, the socket B upon its face at one side, and the shaft C secured in the socket, the face of the blade A lying entirely behind the end of the shaft, substantially as herein described and shown.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALEX. SIMPSON.
