APPLICATION II LBD APR. 12, 1904.
19770 w E/J Patented January 24, 1905.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES ROSS BROWN, OF MONTROSE, SCOTLAND.
GOLFING-CLUB.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 780,? 76, dated. January 24, 1905.
I Application filed April. 12, 1904. Serial No. 202,853.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMEs. Ross BROWN, shipsmith, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and a resident of Montrose, county of Forfar, Scotland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Golfing-Clubs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to improvements in steel or other metal heads of golfingclubs; and it essentially consists in forming them with perforated openings with the object of improving the clubs used for taking the ball out of sand or sand bunkers or longish or marshy grass or turf and the like, and it has been found in practice that these clubs present a less surface action to the resistance of the air in the act of striking the ball and send the latter farther and in a more straight direction than the clubs heretofore in use.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is an elevation of the metal frame of a club provided with my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view of a modification. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2 2, Fig. 2. Fig. 3 is a view of another modified form of club, and Fig. i is a side elevation of still another form of club. According to my improvementsI form the driving-faces of metal club-heads of a perforated shape, the perforations preferably taking the form of a series of longitudinal parallel slots at, as shown in Figs. 1 and- 2,
punched, bored, or stamped out of the clubhead A or cast in it. -As shown in Fig. 1, a solid center part b may be left, or, as shown in vFig. 2, a center disk 0 may e stamped or formed at center part of club-head for assistance to the eye of the player in striking the ball at center of club, and this center part may be formed with holes or perforations 0 for the free passage of air or may be left solid.
In Fig. 3 the perforations a and bars 0Z are shown as formed vertically instead of formation, and this style of club is very suitable for striking the ball out of sand bunkers,
long grass, bushes, and the like; but these perforations may be arranged at any angle or be made of other formation, such as round, hexagonal, or the like. I The bars d of metal parts thus produced between the perforations a would have their edges preferably rounded in front and become tapered or thinner toward the back of the iron in furnace-bar fashion.
The lowest bar or bottom d of frame of club-head would preferably be made broader than the other bars, so as to have more of a lip formation for strength on back.
By these improvements the club-heads A will cut through the sand and strike the ball with more effect, while the sand will pass through the perforated openings at instead of being thrown up on the player by the bevel on the face of the solid metal clubs heretofore in use, while in long or marshy grass the club-head will have a better driving effect on the ball, as the rounded edges of the bars {Z will cut through obstructions and have a more effective action than with solid clubs and with less liability to cutting the skin of the balls, while'it is also found for driving purposes that these club-heads present a less exposed surface action to the resistance of the air and wind whilethe player is taking his action to strike the ball, and the latter will be sent farther and in a more true and direct line than with solid-surface clubs.
I claim as my invention 1. A golf-club, having open perforations in the driving-face, passing entirely through the body of the club-head.
2. A golf-club, having a number of slotted parallel perforations in its driving-face passing entirely through the body of the clubhead. i
3. A golf-club, having a number of slotted perforations in its driving-face passing entirely through the body of the club-head, and iubgtantially parallel with the length of the In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES ROSS BROWN.
