" i GOLF-STICK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patentedd'une 12, 1906.
Application filed ul 6,1905. Serial No. 268,439.
Beit known that I, FREDERICK HERSEY ROBERTSON, a citizen of the United States,
residing at 'Wichita, in'the county of Sedgwick and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Golf-Stick, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to golf-sticks, and has for its object to provide certain new and use .improvements therein, particularlyin the putter type of stick, whereby itmay be used with equal facility by right-hand and left-handplayers without in any manner detracting from the efiectiveness of the stick and the proper balancing thereof.
With this object in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrange-j.
ment of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion size, and
minor details may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the 5 spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of r the invention.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 a side elevation ofa golf-stick embodying the features of the present invention. Fig. 2 is reduced in thickness and in-Width, so as to.
an elevation thereof looking at the striking end ofthe head of the stick. Fig. 3 is a plan section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Like characters of reference designate corresponding partsin each and every figure of the drawings. I The present stick is made up of two main elements, which are the head 1 and-the han-. dle,'2.- The top of the headis flat, and the bottom or underside 2 thereof is convexed rearwardly from thefront end 3 of the head,
said front end being disposed at substantiallyrightangles to theflat top of the head. In
. addition to being convexed on its under side the head is also tapered rearwardly from its front striking end, as best indicated in Fig. 3 of the drawings, whereby the head is greatly swing over the ground from the hands of the ing the ground during the initial upward path player as a'center with a good clearance to prevent the rear; end of the head from strikof the head in the forward stroke'thereof. In addition to being tapered r'earwardly the head also rounded or convexed transversely, so as to give thesamea segmental making the sticks inrights and lefts.
shape, for a purpose as will be hereinafter described.
By preference the head is formed of some hard durable wood, and its forward striking end is provided with a metallic face-plate 4, conforming exactly to the transverse shape of the head and'secured thereto by means of siliitable fastenings 5, countersunk in the p ate.
The handle 2 is set in a socket in the top of the head in alinement with the longitudinal ffdsdthereOf and adjacent the front end of the In connection with the segmental crosssectional shape ofthe head it will be noted that the handle is set at substantially right angles to the flat top of the head, wherefore the head assumes the proper osition' with respect to the handle when the atter is tilted or held at an angle to either side of the vertical,-as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2 of the drawings, which permits of the stick being used by left-hand players as well as righthand players, thus obviating the necessity of y havingv the head rounded or convexed'transversely as well as longitudinally throughout its bottom and opposite sides the head has the proper clearance with respect to the ground when used by either a right-hand player or a left-hand player, wherefore the present stick has a material advantage over the us ual form of stick, wherein the handle is set at an angle to the head, and therefore can be swung in one direction only. Another important advantage of the present invention resides inloc'ating the stick or handle adjacent and, mfact, very close to the striking-face of the head, whereby the liability of the head to tilt out of the pro er position for the mostv eflective action of t e striking-face is reduced to the minimum. Having thus described the invention, what is claimed 1s 1. A olf-stick including a head and a handle, the ead being segmental in cross-section with its under side convexed, the bottomof the head being tapered rearwardly and upwardly and its opposite sides tapered rearwardl and the handle being. connected to the head between its middle and the strikingface thereof and disposed vertically with respect to the longitudinal axis of the head and in substantialparallelism with the striking-' face thereof. f
2. A golf-stick including a head and a handle, the forward striking-face of the head being disposed Vertically and the head being segmental in cross-section with its under side convexed, the bottom of the head being convexed upwardly and rearwardly from its front striking-face and its sides being convexed and tapered rearwardly from its striking-face, and the handle being located adj a- 10 cent the striking-face of the head and disposed in substantially parallelism with said striking-face.
