SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 669,742, dated March 12, 1901.

To (ZZZ whom, it may concern:
I Be it known that I, ALBERT DUDLY,aci1izen of the United States, and a resident of Menominee, in the county of Menominee and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention has for its object to provide simple economical wedge-grip slidingjaw wrenches designed for ready positive adj ustment to correspond to various diameters within certain limits; and it consists in the peculiarities of construction and combination of parts hereinafter particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.
Figure 1 of the drawings represents a side elevation of a wrench in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a similar view of the same, partly in section; Figs. 3 and 4, sectional views respectively indicated by lines 3 3 and 4 4 in the second figure; Fig. 5, a perspective view of a spring-controlled grip-block constituting part of the sliding jaw of the wrench, and Fig. 6 a perspective view of the upper portion of said jaw as it appears when the grip-block is removed.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A indicates the stock, and B a jaw, of my improved wrench, the two being rigid with each other and preferably in one piece, as herein shown. As is also herein shown, the working face of the jaw B may be serrated. The front of the stock is provided with a series of teeth that form a rack having predetermined spacing and engageable with a corresponding rack edge of a block C, constituting part of the slidingjaw of my wrench, and riveted or otherwise made fast to sides of the block are plates D, that oppose the sides of said stock. Pivoted between upper corners of the plates is one end of a tongue E, that extends along the continuous back edge of the stock, and pivoted between lower corners of said plates is a camclamp F, operative against the free end of the tongue.
The upper ends of rack-block O and plates Dare inclined, said plates being provided with inner flanges b c, that engage grooves in a wedge-block G, loose on said rack-block. Spiral springs cl are arranged in the innermost grooves of the wedge block to abut flanges c of plates D above specified, and the working face of said block is preferably serrated, as herein shown, the serrations being opposite those of the opposing fixed jaw B of the wrench.
Block 0, plates D, and the parts in connection therewith constitute the sliding jaw of the wrench, and this jaw is held in adjusted position longitudinally of the stock A by frictional contact of tongue E with the rear edge of said stock when the cam-clamp F is swung up to bind said tongue in working position, as shown in Fig. 1. The cam being swung down, the tongue is loosened,so as to permit a disengagement of the rack-block C from the stock-rack, as shown in Fig. 2, and thereupon the sliding jaw may be readily adjusted to regulate the opening between it and the fixed jaw aforesaid.
The predetermined spacing and length of the stock and block racks is such that a ready positive adjustment of the wrench to correspond with various diameters within certain limits may be readily efl'ected, and in Fig. l I have shown a scale marked on'a side of the stock visible through an aperture in one of the plates D of the sliding jaw, the latterlbeing provided with a pointer-mark to be brought into register with any one of the scale-marks to designate the set of the wrench to accommodate a diameter corresponding to the latter mark. In the present showing the spacing of the intermeshing racks on the stock A and block 0 is such that the wrench may be set to correspond with diameterslfranging from one-half an inch to two inches, the block-rack being nearly twice as long as the stock-rack, and the yield of the wedge-block G against resistance of springs d is such that at any set of the wrench it may be utilized on a nut, pipe, rod, or other device having a diameter one-eighth of an inch less than that corresponding to the positive adjustment of said wrench.
In practice the object to be turned or held is caught between the jaws of the wrench and pressure exerted against the stock of the implement, whereby the wedge-block of its sliding jaw is operated against spring resistance to automatically increase the grip of said jaws in proportion to said pressure.
In matters of detail the herein-described wrench is susceptible of some mechanical variation without departure from my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is a 1. A wrench comprising a stock having a rack-tooth front edge, a fixed jaw at one end of the stock,a sliding jaw consisting of a block having a rack edge engageable with that of said stock, plates in union with the block to oppose the stock sides, a tongue pivoted at one end between upper corners of the plates to extend along the continuous back edge of the aforesaid stock, and a cam-clamp pivoted between lower corners of said plates to operate against the free end of the tongue.
2. A wrench comprising a rack-edge stock and a fixed jaw, a block having a rack edge engageable with that of the stock, inwardlyfianged plates in union with the block to extend above the same and oppose the stock sides, the upper flanged ends of the plates and adjacent end of said block being inclined, a wedge-block loose on the upper end of the rack-block and provided with side grooves engaged by the inwardly-extending flanges of said plates, spiral springs arranged in wedgeblock grooves to abut plate-flanges,and means for locking said rack-block in engagement with said stock. 4

A wrench comprising a stock having a rack-tooth front edge and a side scale, a fixed jaw at one end of the stock, a sliding jaw consisting of a block having a rack edge engageable with that of said stock, plates in union with the block to oppose stock sides, one of the plates being apertured to disclose the stock-scale and provided with a scale pointermark; a tongue pivoted at one end between upper corners of said plates to extend along the continuous back edge of the aforesaid stock, and a cam-clam p pivoted between lower corners of the aforesaid plates to operate against the free end of the tongue.
