Be it known that I, SAMUEL E. STADON, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Carriers for Gates, of which the following is a specification.
. My invention relates to improvements in a carrier for gates; and it consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts, as will be. hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my complete invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan View of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical section taken on the line 00 w of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional View of the hinge, showing a portion of the gate to which the same is attached; and Fig. 5 is a similar view showing the gate partially open.
The object of my invention is to convert the ordinary sliding gate into a hinged gate and,further, provide means whereby the same will automatically close by-slightly elevating the free end of said gate as the same is being opened; and it consists in the details of the construction, as will be hereinafter more specifically described in detail.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents two posts, which are placed in the ground in the usual manner and connected by cross-pieces 2, whereby a space is left between said posts for the movement of the gate 3, the latter being of any well-known construction.
Secured to each of the transverse connecting-pieces 2 is a clip 4, having an extension 5, provided with a perforation 6, which is adapted to freely receive the circular depending end 7 of the U-shaped clip 8, which is bolted tothe longitudinal member of the gate, the said clips when united forming a hinge, as clearly shown in the drawings, in the present instance two of said hinges being employed and located in the manner shown in respect to the gate and tranverse connectingpieces 2.
Attached to the upper connecting crosspiece 2 is'an eyebolt 9, to which is movably attached one end of arod 10, the opposite end of said rod being provided with a hook 11 for receiving any one of the links 12 of the chain 13, the lower end of said chain being attached to the lower free end of the gate, whereby when the gate is opened in the direction as shown by the arrow in Fig. 2 the free end of the same will be slightly elevated and will therefore automatically close by its own gravitation when released, the adjustment being obtained by the employment of the chain 13 and the location of the eyebolt 9 upon the transverse piece 2, to which the said bolt is secured.
In carrying out my invention it is to be ob served that the openings 6 of the extensions 5 of the clips 4 are much larger than the depending ends 7 of the clips 8, whereby when the gate is opened the same will assume an inclined position in respect to the posts, and consequently the free end of the gate will be slightly elevated for the purpose described.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim is- The combination with suitable fence-posts and transverse pieces connecting the same, of a gate located between said posts, U-shaped clips secured to said gate, depending extensions forming a part of the same, clips secured to the transverse pieces and provided with openings adapted to receive said depending extensions of the U-shaped clips, whereby the gate is hinged in respect to the posts, and a carrier composed of an eyebolt secured to the upper transverse piece connecting the posts, a connecting-rod one end of which is movably attached to said eyebolt, a hook formed on the opposite end of said rod, and a chain one end of which is attached to the lower free end of the gate any one of the links of which is adapted to cooperate with the hooked end of the rod, the latter being located on one side of the gate and having its upper end attached to the cross-piece to one side of the hinge carried by the latter, as and for the purpose described.
