Letters Patent No. 66,949, dated Julyv23, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IAN GHURNS.

T0 ALL WHOM 1T MAY CONCERN Be it known that I, L. M. COOK, of Owatonna, in the county of Steele, and State of Minnesota, have invented a new aud useful Combination Churn; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which- Figure y1is a sectional elevation of my invention.
Figure 2 is a horizontal section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
In this invention the churn is provided with two stationary and two movable dash-boards.
In the drawings, A represents the churn, having two stationary dash-boards B B firmly attached to the sides and bottom, and projecting towards the centre 'of the churn, where they almost meet. These dash-boards are directly opposite to each other, and therefore divide the interior of the churn into two equal apartments, leaving only a small passage between them at the centre of the churn. In this passage is stationed an upright shaft, C, stepped in a. suitable box in the bottom ofthe churn, its top projecting through the centre ofthe cover, which holds it in its proper position, and terminating in a crank or handle, D. Two arms, one at the top and one at the b ottom, project from each side of the shaft C linto the two apartment-s of the churn perpendicular to the plate ofthe stationary dash-boards above described. A vertical dash-board, E, is fixed to each pair of these arms.
The churn thus constructed is operated simply by movingI the handle D back and forth through from fifty to eighty degrees of a circle. The milk between the action of the fixed and the stationarydash-boards is thoroughly agitated and butter appears in a few moments.
This arrangement can be used with any churn that will admit of the vertical shaft. With proper packing the shaft might be used evenhorizontally in those churns where it could not be placed vertically. It may be used in a churn of any shape, whether round or square, and with sides either perpendicular or daring.
This mode of construction secures a violent agitation ofthe cream; it gathers the butter and works out the milk readlyj it is' easy` to operate; it can be cleansed without diiiculty; it is light and easy to handle; it excels in cheapness and durability. These are only a few of its merits as tested by actual use. In view of this combination oflexcellencies, I have designated it by the name of the Combination Churn.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The stationary dash-boards B B, substantially as and for the purpose described- 2. The arrangement and combination of the stationary and movable dash-boards, substantially as and for the purpose described.
L. M. COOK.
