SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 668,806, dated February 26, 1901.

Be it known that I, FRANK L. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shelby, in the county of Richland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Manifold Order-Books; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use'the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. 7

My invention relates to improvements in manifold order-books, the features of which will be fully hereinafter described and claimed.

The principal object of my invention is by means of a folded pivotal carbon-frame to produce triplicate copies of orders. This object is attained by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a top view of the blank orderbook with the lid thrown up. Fig. 2 is a like view with the lid omitted and showing the pivotal carbon-frame. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the carbon frame. Fig. 4 is a side view of the book. Fig. 5 is a plan of the jointed carbon-frame with a portion cut away.

Like letters and numerals designate like parts throughout the several views.

The order-book comprises the back of'lids A A, the series of leaves D, and the strips 9 of firm paper arranged transversely at the top, and these parts are secured by the usual wire staples, the construction being much as usual. On the leaves may be printed suitable matter for the special uses of the book. The carbon-frame may be formed of any suitable material; but afirm paper is preferred. The carbon-frame B is open and quadrangular in form and at its left upper corner is provided with the ear'7. The like frame 0 is united to the former by a strip of muslin glued to the contiguous edges, and the two parts are thus adapted to be folded. Before joining the frames the sheet of firm paper 1 is glued to the under surface of the open frame B, and on this is secured the sheet of carbon-paper 2. The frame 0 is prepared in the samemanner with the paper sheet 3 and carbon-sheet 4, and thus arranged the under surface of the carbon-sheet only has contact with the sheets of record. The pivot 6 may be in the form of a paper-tack and put through orifices in the fold of the back and the abutting reinforcing-strips and the ends bent down against the outside, thereof, thus forming an elongated pivot aboutwhich the carbon-frame may freely swing laterally and traverse the same vertically, as shown by dotted lines B, Fig. 2. In this position the carbon-frame is carried Without the space occupied by the leaves.

Operation of forminga triplicate copy: The carbon-frame being carried to the side, two leaves are raised up, the top part of said frame is passed between the two, and when the writing is done on the top sheet the record is made on the two under sheets, and thus are obtained three copies.

Havingfully described myinvention, what I claim is 1. The combination of the blank book provided with the elongated pivot held in the back fold of the covers external to the sheets comprised in said book, the folded carbonframe provided with the ear perforated on one of its members to embrace and traverse vertically said pivot, substantially as described.

2. The combination of the blank-book provided with the pivot held in the back fold of the covers external to the sheets comprised in said book, the carbon-frame provided with the perforated ear at its upper left corner to embrace and to traverse vertically said pivot and thereby admit a lateral swing outside of the space occupied by the sheets of record substantially as described.
