EDWARDZKIRBY'BGTTLE, or NIAGARA FALLS, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR'IO THE CARTER & COMPANY,
LIMITED, OFSAMIE PLACE.
MANIFOLD MEMORANDUM-BOOK;
srncrrtcsrron forming part of Letters Patent No. 469,930, dated March 1, 1892.
Application steamy so, 1891.
To all whom it mag concern. I
Be it known that I, EDWARD KIRBY BOTTLE, I
of Niagara Falls, inthe county of Niagara, in
the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Manifold Memorandum-Books, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description;
.- This invention rlates to the class of memorandum-books which areichiefly used by salesmen in merean tile establishments and in which a carbon-sheet ortransfer-leaf is adapted to beinserted between two adjacent memo-.
randum-leaves toproduce duplicates of the memoranda entered in the-book, the memo randumdeaves being detachable and the original memoranda being sent to the desk of the accountant or book-keeper, and the copies or duplicates are given to the purchaser of the goods entered in the memorandum-book.
The object of my present invention is to simplify and facilitate the attachment of the memorandum-leaves to the supporting-back of thebook; and to that end it consists, es-
sentially, of a meinorandum-book comprising a supporting back plate, a. block of memorandam-leaves secured at one end to the end of said back plate, and frictional paper-holders 1 secured to said back plate and engagingv op- "spending parts.
posite' edges of the memorandum-leaves.
The invention also consists in certain novel featuresof the detail construction of the memorandnm-book, as hereinafter fullydescribed, and specifically ,set forthin the claims.
In the annexed drawings, Figure l is a per-, spective view of an open memorandumbook embodying my invention.' Fig.2 isa longitudinal section on line mm, FighlwFigs. 3 and 4 are transverse sections'respectively on lines y y and z z,'and Fig. 5 is a detached edge view of the transferJeaf-holding clamp. Similar letters of reference indicate corre 0 cc represent the memorandum-leaves, which are piled 1n the form of' a block and preferably formed of a continuous web of paper folded successively and alternately in.

the leaves when desired. This block of leaves I place upon a stiff back plate P, which I pref.- erably form with an extension P to serve as a cover for the book. I do not, however,'limit myself to the use of a cover for the book; but the back plate P is essential to my improvements. inasmuch as it affords a firm support for the memorandum-leaves. To the top of the upper end portion of this back plate Iattach a metal plate C, which extends across the plate P and terminates with vertically-slotted ears ()"C', which project at right angles from the plane of the plate. Said plate 0 is.also formed with a vertical wall C' extending across the back plate P for the purpose herein'atter explained. I y
a denotes a clamp, which is composed of two bars hinged together at oneend and having the opposite end of one bar terminating with a tongue passing through the other bar and clinched to lock them together. Between these bars is clamped the carbon-sheet or transferleaftl. The ends of the said clamp extend' through the, slotsof the ears C C which sustain the clamp at right angles to the side edges of theaback plate P and movably toward and from the planeof said plate. The block one endunderneath the clamp a, which 'has attached to it the transfer-leaf d, and 'thus carries said leaf over the aforesaid block and in a convenient position to allow it to he readily introduced between the' two uppermost .of memorandum-leaves c 0 cc is inserted at memorandu m-leaves c 0 when required to produce duplicate meinoranda, -In introducing the block of memorandnm leaves under the the vertical wall G' of the" metal plate 0, whereby said'blockis confined endwise in one direction. A
In order to retain the-freeends of the memo-. randum-le'aves compactly upon the back plate P while reniovin g the two top leaves from the block, I provide the said back plate with suitable frictional holders engaging the side edges of the memorandum-leaves. For this purpose I prefer to provide the back plate P with side walls P -P and glue onto the inner sides of clamp a said block is to be pushed up against a said walls strips or'small pieces of sand-paper I or emery-paper b b, wh rough or friction the memorandumof saidleaves compactly Having described claim as new, and des Patent, is-
1. The combination of d with side walls P P, ndum-leaves c c c, secured to one end e-t'ran'sfer-leaf on top heels secured to ls'and engaging foresaid block, as set forth. f the back plate P,-
friction-slieets the block 0t memoranduminvention, what I ire to secure by the back plate P, the block ofof the back plate, with 111 of the block, and friction-s the inner sides of the edges ofthe a 2. The combination 0 rovided with sid b on said walls, sheets 0 co, lying with one end on the end of lying upon said the side wal e walls I" P,
20 the backplate, the clamp 'a,
end of the block, and the'ti ansfer-lea/E (Z, attached-to said clamp,-as described and shown.
The improved memorandum-book consisting oi the back plate 1, provided with the side walls lf P, the plate C,extending across Is the ,upper end of the back plate and secured thereto and formed with vertically-slotted ears C C, the clamp a, having extensions passing through said ears, the block of memorandum-leaves confined between said clamp 30 r and underlying plates, the transfer-leaf d, s e cured to the clamp, and the friction-sheets-b b on the walls I P, substantially as 'set forth and shown.
Intestimony whereof I have hereunto signed 35 my name this 9th day of July, 1891.
