RANSOM R. SPOORE, OF NEWARK, NEW YORK.
DISK O R DOUBLE STOPPLE FOR BOTTLES.
SPECIFIC ATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 668,567, dated February 19, 1901.
Application filed December 14, 1900. Serial No. 39,860. \No model-J To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RANSOM R. SPOORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Wayne and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Disksor Double Stopples for Bottles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention; such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in twin disks or double stopples for sealing milkbottles and the like; and one object of the invention is to provide the twin disks or double stopples with a curvilinear uniting-strip, so that when they are closed handles are formed for removing said disks from the bottles after they have first been closed together and inserted in the neck of the bottle, thus sealing securely the contents therein; and a further object is to utilize the surface of the stopper as an advertising medium, this advertising means being equally applicable to one disk or stopple as to twin disks or double stopples.
With these ends in view the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more in detail described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, to which reference is had and which fully illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a plan and edge view showing the disks or stopples closed, and Figs. 2 and 3 show them open.
Referring to the drawings, A and B designate two twin disks or double stopples which are united together by means of a short narrow curvilinear strip 0, which when the disks are closed one upon the other provide handles D, through the medium of which the disks are removed from the neck of the bottle. These disks are out out of one piece of material by means of a stamp-die or other suitable means adapted for the purpose and being made of wood, pulp, or paper-board suitably prepared will not injure the milk. Upon the outer surface of the upper disk or stopple various advertisements may be displayed. The means herein employed are of the first importance and a great advantage to the public and also beneficial to both milkmen and others who advertise, as it is the best and most reliable Way to distribute advertising matter. By my construction of disks, it will be observed, twice the sealing power is produced, the narrow curvilinear connecting-strip forming the handles or necessary convenience for lifting the stopple or disks. Being cut narrow, it does not injure the sealing power, and also possesses sufficient strength so that the disks may be removed several times before being discarded; but being inexpensive they can be furnished to the consumer so cheaply that they can be thrown away after being once used without material loss and from the fact that they can be replaced by a new one every morning enhan ces their value as an advertising medium.
Combining the advertising medium with the improvement in milk-bottle stopples enables me to furnish the stopples free of charge, if necessary, as the advertising pays for the stock and gives a profit besides, thus making it advantageous to the public.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A double disk stopper formed from a blank consisting of two circular pieces connected by a strip said blank being folded midway of said strip in such manner that the strip forms a projecting handle.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
RANSOM R. SPOORE.
