Application filed June 18,1900. Serial No. 20,201. (Nomodeh) To all 2072,0712, it may concern:
Be it known that i, WILLIAM J. RUssnLL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Charleston, in the county of York, State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash Holders and Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Myinvention relates to combined sash holders and fasteners; and its object is to provide a device of this nature which shall be cheap of manufacture, simple of construction, and which shall be so arranged as to enable the sash to be held either in a raised or lowered position.
With this object in view I have construct ed a device of this nature which is described in this specification and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention applied to a winrhm trame. Fig. 2 is a sectional View showing thcinterior construction.
Referring now to the drawings, my invention comprises a casing a, substantially rectangular in form and adapted to be fastened to the side of a window-sash by means of screws, s shown at h. Extending from the front 0 to the back (Z of the casing are pivots c and f, upon which are mounted catches g and IL. These catches are extended through openings in the side i of the casing, and their protruding ends are beveled to form points j. Mounted in the guideways 7t and between the inner ends of the catches g and his a sliding bolt Z, having sockets m at either side to receive the rounded inner ends of the catches. The bolt l extends through a perforation in the side a of the casing, and its outer end is provided with a head 0. Interposed between the inner end of the slidingbolt and adjacent the wall of the casing a is a spring p to hold the plate normally distended from the casing, thus holding the points of the catches normally without the casing.
The operation of my invention is as follows: Assuming that the window-sash is in a closed position, the sharp end j of the catch Q will be in engagement with the windowcasing, and when it is desired to raise the sash the bolt Z should be forced into the casing, thus carrying with it its sockets m, thus swinging the catches upon their pivots, drawing their sharpened ends within the casing. The sash may then be raised, and when it has reached its desired height the bolt Z is released, and the point of the catch it will then engage with the casing and prevent the lowering of the sash.
It will be understood that I may manufacture my invention of any suitable material and that I may make slight alterations in the construction herein shown and described without departing materially from the spirit thereof.
Having now fully shown and described my invention, What I claim is A combined sash holder and fastener comprising a casing, guideways mounted in the casing, a sliding bolt mounted in the guide ways and having an end protruding from the casing, an enlargement on the bolt, slots at opposite sides of the enlargement, said slots being narrowed toward their bases, catches pivoted at either side of the bolt, the inner ends of the catches lying within the slots of the enlargement and the outer ends normally extending through openings in the casing, a spring lying between the catches and having an end in engagement with the inner end of the bolt and an end in engagement with the casing whereby the bolt will be normally held at its outer limit of motion and the projecting ends of the catches will be held normally extended from the casing.
In testimony whereof I hereunto sign my name and affix my seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses on this 28th day of May, 1900.
WILLIAM J. RUSSELL.
