Application filed October 6, 1900- Serial No. 32,228. (No model.)
To u?! whom it may cor worn:
Be it known that l, Josnrn BEOHER AN- DERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ambler, in the county of lllontgomery and Stale of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Locking Attachment for Doors, Shutters, the, of which the following is a SPGOlllCZthlUll.
it is the object or the present invention to if.) prriivide a simple, neat, strong, durable, and
comparatively inexpensive locking attach- ,ers, and the like; and to this and other ends the ii'ivention consists of the improvements hereinafter described and i5 claimed.
The nature, cha acteristic features, and scope of my invention will be more fully understood from the followingdescriptiointalren in connection with the accompanying draw- 2o ings, forming part hereof, and in which- Figure l is a central sectional View oi the new and useful locking attachment embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevational view of the same. Fig. 3 is a crosssectional view of the same, showing the key or spanner about to be inserted.
detail view of the key or spanner.
While the invention is applicable to shutters, doors, and the like, l have selected shut- Fig. i is a 3,0 ters as beluga good example for illustration,
and in the d rawings, (t and a are shutters provided with castings or housings h and I). The casting or housing b comprises a guide fora sliding bolt 5 which is provided with notches b" and h. The casting or housing I) is adapted to contain suitable mechanism for securing the bolt against accidental or other displacement when in locked position. As shown, the locking mechanism comprises a pair of no movable members c and c, held in normal position by leaf springs (Z. "When the bolt b is shifted over in order to lock the shutters, the bolt shifts said members out of position until the notches h and 5 come opposite their respective members 0 and c, whereupon the members drop into the notches and securely hold the bolt against displacement until it is desired to open the shutters. Thus it will be shown.
ters and before the bolt 19 could be drawn would have to insert a key or spanner in the keyhole g, which would come in contact with the lug h. A slight turn of the spannerf would bring its notches in alinement with the rods 6 and e, whereupon a slight push inward would bring them into communication with the rods, and a still further turn would push the member 0 upward and the member 0 vice versa, thus releasing the notches in the bolt and permitting the person operating the lock to draw the bolt and open the shutters.
Shutters or doors provided with such an ar rangement protect householders and others against burglary, &c., by reason of the fact that even though some one from the outside try to make an entrance by cutting an opening in the shutter the bolt cannot be drawn because it is held by the locking attachment.
it will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which my invent-ion appertains that modifications may be made in details without departing from the spirit thereof. Hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction and arrangement of parts hereiuabove set forth, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings; but,
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The combination with a bolt provided with notches nearone end, a keeper therefor comprising a pair of sliding spring-pressed locking-bolts adapted to normally engage the notched bolt, and means for simultaneously withdrawing said pair of locking-bolts from engagement with the notched bolt, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a notched bolt, a keeper for said bolt comprising a pair of spring-pressed locking-bolts adapted to move vertically with respect to the notched bolt and normally engage the same, links connected to said pair of bolts, and a spanner adapted to engage the links and release the bolts, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name.
J. BEOHER ANDERSON.
