TOOL-HANDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 667,105, dated January 29, 1901.
Application filed June 14, 1900.
To all whom, it may concern.:
Be it known that I, NELSON N. SLOAN, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tool-Handles;
land I do declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to tool-handles.
The object of the invention is to providea tool-handle with a sim ple, durable, and inexpensive clamp which will accommodate tools having shanks of different sizes.
To this end the invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a perspective view of myimproved toolhan- Ole, showing it applied to a chisel-blade. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line x 0c of Fig. 2.
In the drawings the same reference characters indicate the same parts of the invention.
l denotes the handle of the tool-clamp. The clamp consists of two spring-jaws a b, which are bolted or otherwise secured to the lower end of the handle. The forward ends of the jaws are curved transversely, as shown, and intermediate their ends, on their inner sides, are integral blocks or nuts 5. One of the jaws has iXedly secured to it by rivets or other means a ferrule 6, encompassing the outer ends of both jaws. This ferrule 6 is provided with notches 7 to receive the upper end of the tool and assist in preventing its twisting. The jaw b, which is not riveted to the ferrule, is formed at its forward end with a tongue or projection 8, which projects through an aperture 9 in the ferrule and steadies said jaw in its movement toward the opposite jaw.
Serial No. 20,346. (No model.)
12 denotes afeed-screw having a right and left hand thread 13 and .14 to engage the integral nuts of the jaws, and by rotating the screw said jaws are brought together firmly into engagement with the tool-tang. If the tang be of a construction not corresponding to or capable of being grasped by the jaws, wedge-blocks 16, such as are shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings, may be employed to take up the space.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation, and advantages of my improved tool-handle will be readily appreciated without requiring an extended explanation.
It will be seen that the device is simple of construction, that said construction permits of its manufacture at small cost, and that it is exceedingly well adapted for the purpose for which it is designed.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minordetails of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
The combination with a toolhandle; of spring-jaws fixed thereto and provided with integral nuts on their meeting faces, a ferrule fixed to one of said jaws, and provided with a slot, a tongue integral with one of said jaws, said tongue projecting through said slot, and a screw having a right and left hand thread to engage the integral nuts of said jaws, substantially as and for the pur-I pose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
NELSON N. SLOAN.
