To all whmn it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOSEPH ALBERT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Food-Cabinets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention has especial reference to cabinets placed upon the counters, bars, or tables of restaurants, cafes, bakeries, and other establishments for containing perishable articles of food; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts, as will be fully set forth hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.

In the said drawings, Figure l is a central transverse sectional view through a device embodying my invention, taken on line 1 1 of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a plan view of said device, partly broken away to better illustrate certain details of construction.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the top of a counter, bar, or table, and B the base of my said cabinet, preferably raised above said top by legs I) b.

O 0 represent the ends of the cabinet,which are formed with upper rear horizontal edges united by the upper rear horizontal board D, forward of which the said upper edges of the end boards 0 C taper downwardly to the height of the vertical front board E, whose upper edge is correspondingly beveled,so that the cover frame F when closed may rest closely upon the upper edges of the said end boards 0 G and front board E, the said coverfraine being secured by hinges d d to the described upper rear board D, against the forward edge of which board D the rear edge of the back piece of the said cover-frame F abuts, as best shown in Fig, 1. This cover-frame F carries a glass panel'or panels G, whereby the contents of the cabinet may be exposed to the view of those in front of said counter,

bar, or table.

Access to the rear of the cabinet is obtained by'opening the door formed of the rear vertical board H', which is hinged to the base B of the cabinet, as shown at c c. The said door H may incline slightly forward, so as to remain closed by gravity, if preferred, when its upper part abuts against the rear edge of the board D, or said door H may be supplied with a suitable spring-bolt e or other fastening device for engagement with a block or projection f on the under side of the upper rear board D, as shown in Fig. 1. The door H is shown provided with a panel I, which may be of either glass or wood, as preferred.

J represents an open-topped box which is of a similar shape to that of the cabinet,within the central rear part of which it is secured,

having correspondingly-inclined sides or ends and a front wall of less height than its rear wall and which may be made of sheet-tin or galvanized sheet-iron, so as to avoid rusting, the said box being designed to contain ice,

and the same is provided with a drain-pipe g,

which passes through a suitable hole in the base B of the cabinet and leads to any convenient place of discharge.

The free front edge of the cover-frame F is provided with a ring or eye h, to which is attached one end of a cord K, and when the cabinet is located in the desired position this cord K is passed up and over a pair of pulleys t't', secured to the ceiling of the room or any other suitable support, and thence downward,

and to the free end of this cord is attached a weight or counterbalance L, as shown, the latter to be within reach of the attendant behind the counter or bar and of sufficient weight to just counterbalance the weight of the cover-frame and panel F G when the latter is raised by pulling on the said cord K. The said pulleys are suspended wholly above and free from contact with said cabinet and arranged one back of the other, the front pul o ley being in line with the front of the cabinet and the rear pulley arranged in horizontal line with the front pulley, but in a vertical plane back of the rear of said cabinet.

The operation of my device will be readily 5 a very useful and convenient adjunct to all establishments where perishable articles of food or luncheon are displayed to the cusa ay toiners. By elevating the cabinet above the supporting-counter or other surface a circulation of air is obtained below and all around the cabinet, which aids in the preservation of the food contained therein.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A food-cabinet, having an upper transverse horizontal board at the extreme rear edge thereof, in combination with a coverframe hinged at its rear edge to the front edge of said upper horizontal rear board, a pair of pulleys suspended above and free from contact with said cabinet, and arranged one back of the other, the front pulley being in line with the front of the cabinet and the rear pulley arranged in horizontal line with the front pulley, but in a vertical plane back of the rear of said cabinet, a cord secured to the free front edge of the said hinged cover-frame and thence extending upward to the front pulley and over the same and back horizontally to and over the rear pulley, and a weight secured to the free end of said cord, above and back of the rear of said cabinet.

2. A food-cabinet, comprising a case having a base and sides or ends, and a vertical front board, all rigidly united together, the

front being of less height than the rear of said cabinet, and an upper transverse horizontal board at the extreme rear edge of the cabinet rigidly united to said sides or ends, and the sides or ends, forward of said upper horizontal. rear board, inclined downwardly to the plane of the top of the said vertical front board, in combination with a rear door hinged to said base, and having its upper free edge abutting against the rear edge of said upper horizontal rear board; a cover-frame hinged at its rear edge to the front edge of said upper horizontal rear board, and resting on the downwardly-inclined upper edges of the said sides or ends, and an open-topped ice-box secured within the central rear part of said cabinet, and having correspondinglyinclined sides or ends, and a front Wall of less height than its rear wall, and a drain-pipe leading through the base of the cabinet.
