Description

(No Model.)
- D. D. VAN WIE;
COMBINED MAP, CHART, AND BOOK CASE.
z Patented Mar. 2, 1886 WITNESSES.
ihvrrnn STATES DANIEL D. VAN \VIE, OF
PATENT Fries.
INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
COMBINED MAP, CHART, AND BOOK CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 387,095, dated March 2, 1886. Application filed January 23, 1885, Serial No. 153,802. (No model.)
' following is a specification.
The object of my said invention is to produce, especially for use in school-rooms, an improved map or chart holder and book-case combined in one article of furniture, by the use of which all the ordinary reference books and charts can be arranged in one case in such a manner as to be easy of access at all times, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof, and on which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved map, chart, and book case; Fig. 2, a transverse vertical sectional view looking to the right from the dotted line z 2, one set of the chart or map rolls being drawn out for the purpose of illustrating its use; and Fig. 3, a detail horizontal sectional view looking downwardly from the dotted line y y.
In said drawings, the portions marked A represent the frame-work or case; B, the door of the book -case portion; O, the sliding frames in which the map or chart rolls are mounted, and D said rolls.
The case A is of any suitable form and of a convenient size, the top having the rectangular frames 0 mounted therein, as shown, and the lower part being adapted to receive books of reference, and may be provided with shelves or not, as will best accommodate the books to be placed therein. The floor A of said book-case preferably has its under front corner mitered or beveled back, so as to joint with the lower edge of the door B, which is hinged thereto. Sliding supports A are provided directly under this floor, which are adapted to be pulled out and support the door when turned down, as will be hereinafter more particularly described. The central portions of their top edges are preferably out down, so that the downwardlyprojecting corner of the door will not strike against said edges when said door is turned down.
The door B is any suitable door, and is preferably hinged to the bottom A at its lower edge by the hinges 1). Its lower inside corner is preferably mitered to correspond with the miter of the edge of said bottom, and is hinged at the point where the miter begins. Thus when the door is opened or turned down horizontally, the part below the hinges bears tightly against the miter on the under side of the bottom and helps support said doorfa'rid when the door is closed it gives the case a a smooth front, the lower part of the door extending down even with that portion of the I front of the case immediately beneath it.
The door when opeued is adapted to serve as a rest for the books while they are being examined.
The rectangular frames 0 are mounted in the top of the case on slides C, and, ex 7c cept that they are bottomless, are formed and mounted similarly to a set of drawers, which they are intended to resemble when closed, a knob or knobs, 0, being provided, by which they can be moved out and in. Journal-bearings c for the journals of the rolls are formed in the sides of these frames. Said journalbearings are preferably formed open-topped for the purpose of allowing the rolls to be easily removed or put in place. There may be as many of the frames as necessary to accommodate the required number of rolls. A gravity hook or catch, 0", is pivoted on the side of each frame, and a notch,
1: is formed in the top of the slides G, with 8 which said catch engages when said frame has been pulled out as far as it should go, thus guarding against the liability of pulling said frame entirely out except when desired. \Vhen it is desired to remove these frames, 0 said catches may be lifted, and theobject can then be accomplished, as will be readily understood.
The rolls D are or may be any suitable rolls, and are mounted in the bearings in the frames 0 in the well-known manner, a suit able or convenient number being mounted in each frame. They are preferably spring-rolls, such as are commonly used to mount maps on; but, as will be readily understood, any roll may be used without departing from my invention. The maps or charts are mounted thereon in the ordinary or any desirable man ner.
The use of my improved case may be briefly described as follows: The maps, charts, and 5 books being arranged for use in the case, and it being desired to refer to some one of the maps or charts, the frame in which it is mounted is pulled out a sufficient distance to bring its rolls outside of the casing, when the map or chart may be pulled down at pleasure, the spring in the one operating to roll it up again when the use is concluded, in the usual manner. \Vheu it is desired to refer to one of the books contained in the book-case, the slidi ing-supports A are drawn out and the door B is turned down thereon, as before described, and a table thus provided to support the "'"books while being examined.
When in use the case may be hung up against a wall or supported on brackets or on a convenient stand, or may be made with appropriate supporting frame-work under it, as will best accommodate its size and the particular use to which it is put. Having thus fully described my said inventiou, rwhat I claim as new, and desire to secure 'by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the case, sliding frames therein, slides for supporting said ,0 frames, rolls for carrying maps or ehartsin sad siding frames, and a door hinged to the floor of the case, said door and floor being mitered where they are hinged together, all substantially as set forth. 2. The combination, with the case A, of the door B, sliding frames G, removably mounted in the top of said case and provided with pivoted gravity-catches 0, adapted to engage with notches c in the slides O, and
rolls I), mounted in said sliding frames and 40 adapted to have maps or charts mounted thereon, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with the case A, of the floor A, having its under side front corner mitered, the sliding supports A mounted under said floor and having their top edges hollowed out, and the door B, hinged to the front edge of the floor A and having its lower inside corner mitered, said mitered part extending below the hinges, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
4. In a combined map, chart, and book case, the combination of the floor A, sliding supports A", door B, hinged at its bottom to the floor A and adapted to turn down upon said supports A, the sliding frames 0. mounted on slides in the top of said case, and the rolls mounted in bearings in said frames, all arranged and operating substantially as set forth.
5. The combination of the case A, door B, having mitered lower edge, correspondinglymitered bottom A, to which said door is hinged, frames (3, slides in said case for supporting said frames, rolls mounted in said sliding frames for carrying maps or charts, and sliding supports A for sustaining said door when folded down, the whole constitutinga combined map, chart, and book case, as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and'seal. at Indianapolis. Indiana, this 20th day of January, A. D. 1885.
