Be it known that I, HENRY S. CULVER, a citizen of the United States, residing at London, in the Province of Ontario and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Docu ment-Files, of which the following` is a specication.

My said invention consists in an improved construction of file for papers and documents of such character as may be desirable to bind together for permanent record or convenient reference when the file has become filled, whereby such binding may be readily done, all as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof, and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts, Figure l is a perspective View of one of my improved files of the character intended to file away checks, vouchers, duc. Fig. 2 is a cross-section through the same on the dotted line 2 2 in Fig. 3; Fig. 3, a detail longitudinal section through one corner, as on the dotted line 3 3 in Fig. 2; Fig. 4, a perspective view of the end of the book of checks, vouchers, 85o., after removal from the file and partly bound; and Fig. 5, a view similar to Fig. l, showing a form designed for use in binding folders of letter size or larger.

In said drawings, the portions marked A represent the base of the file, B the sliding base, and C C the covers for the papers to be filed.

The general construction of the file is substantially the same as that shown in my Patent No. 646,360, dated March 27, 1900, the present invention beingin the nature of modifications and additions in that structure, whereby it is made capable of the additional uses stated.

The stationary base A is provided with the curved uprights l and sliding base B with the straight uprights 2. Said uprights 2 are formed hollow or with longitudinal perforations for the purpose to be presently described. Said sliding base B is mounted to slide on the base A by means of ways and engaging flanges on said parts, as in said patent, the uprights l and 2 being rigidly xed on their respective parts, and a catch 3 being provided by which said parts are locked when in closed position.

As stated, the uprights 2 are formed hollow and a slot through the wall of each on the adjacent sides of each p air extends from top to bottom. In Fig. l I have shown a serrated post 9 between said uprights 2, which may be found desirable to engage a follower or the front end of the top cover to hold the papers flat, as more fully described in my patent above referred to. This is not, however, an essential feature of this invention.

The lower cover C is a board of the desired character for the purpose provided with perforations adapted to slip over the uprights 2. In the construction shown in Fig. l there are two of such perforations and in that shown in Fig. 5 four. A binding wire or cord 4 is attached to the under side of this cover, extending u'p through these perforations in positions to pass into the hollow posts 2 through the vertical slots when the board is placed thereon. In practice I find that the most convenient way is to cut the wire, so that its ends will extend up through a pair of perforations in the board to the desired height, which will be substantially the height of the posts 2, the middle portion of said wire resting upon the under side of said board, as shown in Fig. 2. The Wires are thus strongly attached and are in position to slide into the slots in the posts when the board is slid to position. The papers are then filed on said posts in the usual manner, the Wires being entirely out of the way until a book of the desired thickness has been made up. The cover C is then put in position. Said lcover is substantially the same as the lower cover, except that it is provided with a hinge or flexible portion at 5 in order that it may be conveniently turned back for the purpose of examining the book when desired. At its rear end or the edge which will be the back of the book it is provided with suitable securing devices, such as studs 6 in the form of eyelets, as shown, or any other appropriate form, around which the upper ends of the binding-Wires may be tightly drawn and secured, as shown in Fig. 4. A flap 7, of cloth or other suitable material, is also preferably provided on the top cover, as shown, adapted tovbe pasted over the end of the book thus formed to cover the bindingwires and studs and make a neat finish to the job. Said flap may be gummed and at- IOO tached to said cover C', as shown in Figs. 1, 3, and et, before the binding is done, or it may be pasted over the end after the parts have been bound together by the wires, as will be readily understood.

In use the papers are filed in the ordinary manner, the cover O, with the binding-wires attached, being put in position on the posts 2 first, and the cover C' being usually used as a follower. When the booky is formed of the thickness desired, the whole is lifted o the posts by means of the lower cover, when thel Wires will be found projecting through the perforations in the top cover. Said ends are then attached to the studs 6 and the iap 7 pasted over the end, when the binding operation is completed, and the papers placed in a condition in which theycan be very conveniently referred to and permanently preserved.

While I have shown the file with two posts in Fig. l, as when designed for use in iilingcanceled checks, vouchers, receipts, &c, and with four posts in Fig. 5, as when' designed for ling circular letters and large sheet documents, it will be understood, of course, that the number may be varied, as desired, for any character of binding to be done, and that in other details the construction and arrangement of parts may be changed without departing from my invention.

Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim` as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination with a letter-file, of the posts 2 mounted on a supporting-base and formed with slots in their sides, the lower cover O having perforations arranged to pass over said posts and carrying binding-wire eX- teuding up through said perforations in position to pass into said slots, and the top cover O having corresponding perforations for said posts and devices for the attachment of said i binding-Wires, substantially as set forth.

2. In a letter-file, the combination, of the base, the hollow posts 2 with longitudinal slots in the adjacent sides of each pair, the lower cover C having perfor-ations adapted to pass over said posts, a binding-wire with -its ends passing up through said perforations and its central portion resting against the under side of said cover between said perforatious, the top cover C formed with a hinge 5, and having means for the attachment of said binding-wires, all substantially as set forth.
