Description

No. 666,640. Patented Ian. 29, will. C. A. BLOM.
HORSE COLLAR.
(Application filed May 26. 1900.)
(No Nodal.)
UNITE STATES CHARLES ALFRED BLOM, OF ORANGEVALE, CALIFORNIA.
HORSE-COLLAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 666,640, dated January 29, 1901.
Application filed May 26,1900.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES ALFRED BLOM, a citizen of the United States, residing at ()rangevale, in the county of Sacramento and State of California, have invented a new and useful Horse-Collar Attachment, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to horse-collars, and more particularly to an attachment for the same which can be applied thereto for the purpose of. relieving the pressure upon the animal at any desired point; and it consists in the novel construction of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings the same reference-mimerals indicate corresponding parts in each of the views in which they occur.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a horsecollar provided with my attachment. Fig. 2 is a view of the collar, showing the same in section where the attachment is applied thereto, and Fig. 3 is a detail View of the at? tachment.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates a horse-collar, which may be of any suitable size and construction, and 2 indicates my attachment. The attachment comprises a bolt the outer end of which is pointed and screw-threaded, and the head 4 is enlarged and concaved upon its outer surface. A nut 5 fits upon the screw-threaded portion, and a shield 6 fits upon the pointed end.
It is a Well-known fact that horses are very apt to be troubled with what are called the collar-galls, which are caused by the collar bearing too heavily upon one part of the shoulder. While the horse is being worked it is impossible for these sores to be healed unless means be provided for holding the collar away from the gall long enough for it to heal. My attachment is intended to be secured to the collar wherever it is in contact with the gall, which can be easily determined by the marks made upon the inner face of the collar.
In applying my attachment to the collar the pointed end is inserted or passed through the collar at the point directly over the gall, and the out upon the outer end is tightened sufficiently to draw the head of the bolt into Serial No. l8,ll2. (No model.)
the inner face of the collar a sufficient dis tance to prevent that portion of the collar from coming in contact with the gall, and thereby giving the gall an opportunity to heal. After the attachment has been secured in position the shield or protector is placed over the pointed end to prevent injury from contact with the sharp point of the bolt. After the gall has healed and it is desirable to remove the attachment the shield and nut are removed from the outer end of the bolt and the bolt withdrawn from the collar, which will permit of the collar assuming its original shape and configuration, the hole made by the bolt not being large enough to do any permanent injury to the collar.
By means of my improved attachment it is evident that any portion of the collar may be cupped, as it were, upon its inner face by the concave head of the bolt to such an extent as to relieve the pressure from any desired portion of the shoulder of the animal, and thereby give the gall an opportunity to heal without injury to the animal and without the necessity of ceasing to use the animal for the ordinary purposes.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An attachment for collars comprising a bolt, the outer end of which is screw-threaded and pointed and the inner end is provided with an enlarged solid head, the outer face of which is concaved, a nut on the screwthreaded portion, and a shield upon the tip or sharpened end of the bolt, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a collar, of an attachment adj ustably and removably secured thereto, said attachment comprising a bolt, the head of which is enlarged and concaved upon its outer face and fits against the inner face of the collar and the body portion extends through the collar and has its outer end screw-threaded and pointed, a nut on the screw-threaded portion, and a shield on the tip or pointed end, substantially as described.
