WVILLIAM F. BRIGGS, OF BRISTOL, RHODE ISLAND.
CLOTHES-LINE PROP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 666,228, dated January 15, 1901.
Application filed June 10, 1899. Serial No. 720,081. (No model- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM F. BRIGGS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bristol, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clothes-Line Props, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the improved construction and operation of the catch for attachment to the clothes-line and in the improved attachment of the pivoted holding-shoe to the lower end of the pole, as hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved clothes-line prop. Fig. 2 represents a section taken in the line 2 2 of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 represents a section taken in the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 represents an enlarged section taken in the line at 4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 represents an enlarged detail view of the lower end of the pole. Fig. 6 represents a section taken in the line 6 6 of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 represents an enlarged cross-section taken in the line 7 7 of Fig. 1, showing the longitudinal groove in the pole.
In the drawings, A represents the clothesline, and B the wooden pole, provided at its upper end with the metallic strap a, to which is pivoted the catch 0, which, in conjunction with the projecting end 0 of the pole B, serves to firmly clasp the line A, the catch 0 being locked in its engaging position upon the line by means of the wire rod D, which is loosely held for turning movement in the groove 1) of the pole and provided at its upper end with the lateral locking-arm d and at its lower end with the bent arm 6, the arm d serving to lock the catch C in engagement with the line A and the arm 6 serving as a finger-lever for the proper turning of the rod D for the purpose of either locking or unlocking the catch C.
The pivoted holding-shoe E is secured to the lower end of the wooden pole B by means of the ears F F, formed with the fiangesf f, which embrace the opposite edges of the pole, and with the ofiset portion g, one of the said ears F being secured to the outer side of the pole and the other held in a sawed slit h, both ears being then secured by means of the screw 2'. By the employment of the ears F F, having the flanges ff and the offset portion g in connection with the slit h in the pole B, I am able to provide an easily-constructed durable attachment with the employment of a single screw 1;.
The shoe E, which bears upon the ground, is pivotally connected to the ears F.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of the pole B, provided with the projecting end a, and the pivoted catch 0, with the rod D, provided at its upper end with the locking-arm d, and at its lower end with the arm e, and adapted for turning movement to lock and unlock the catch, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the pole B, provided with the slit h, and the ears F F, provided with the flanges f f, and the offset port-ion g, with the double-ended engaging shoe E, pivoted to the ears, substantially as described.
WILLIAM F. BRIGGS.
