N-TTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR R. SPEER, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
WASHBOARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 666,035, dated January 15, 1901.
Application filed May 10. 1899. Serial No. 716,279. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR R. SPEER, a resident of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Washboards, (Case 13;) and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to Washboards, its object being to provide for the draining of the water back over the surface of the board and at the same time protect the person using the board from the water raised by the rubbing action.
My invention comprises certain details of construction, all of which will be hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will describe the same more fully, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved washboard. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of same. Fig. 3 isa cross-section on the line 3 3, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a cross-section on the line 4 4, Fig. 2.
Like letters of referenceindicatelike parts in each. 1
The letter a designates the sides of the washboard, with the leg portions at the lower end thereof, by means of which the washboard is supported. The back I), which supports the corrugated metal plate 0, which forms the rubbing-surface, hasthe tongues d, adapted to enter the grooves e, formed on the inner faces of the sides a. The side edges of the metal rubbing-plate 0 also enter grooves e, the lower horizontal portion of said plate entering the seat 9 in the lower cross-bar h. The upper horizontal portion of the rubbingplate 0 enters a seat '5, formed in the inclined cross-bar k, the ends of said cross-bar fitting in the seats on the inner face of said sides a.
A back m at the upper end of the board has its lower-edge fitting in a seatn in the inclined cross-bar k and its upper edge fitting in a seat 97/ in the upper cross-piece 0. The side edges of the back m fit within the seats r in the sides a. In this manner a very secure support for the back we is obtained. Just in front of the back m is the back 8 of shelf t to permit the water to escape from said shelf.
When my improved washboard is in use and the wet clothes are rubbed up and down the rubbing-surface, the water thrown up by the rubbing action will pass up between the backs m and s and will then flow back over the inclined bar It onto the rubbing-surface, the water being thus all drained over the rubbing-surface. Any Water carried by the soap when placed upon the shelf 25 will drain off through the space 15 back onto the board, thus preventing waste of the soap caused by its remaining in the water which has been carried by it onto the end of the soap-holder.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
-1. In a washboard, side pieces supporting a back, a metal rubbing-plate covering said back, an inclined crossbar at the upper end of said back, the upper edge of said rubbingplate fitting in a groove in the lower front side of said inclined bar, and an upper back having its lower edge fitting in a seat in the upper rear side of said inclined cross-bar and its upper edge fitting in a seat in the top cross-bar, substantially as set forth.
2. In a washboard, a top cross-bar, sides supporting a back and rubbing-plate, a crossbarat the upper end of said rubbing-plate, an upper back engaging said cross-bar and the sides and top cross-bar, a separate back for a soap-holder supported by said sides leaving a space between the upper back and the soap-holder, and a shelf supported by said sides to leave an opening between said shelf and said soap-holder back, whereby the water is permitted to escape, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I, the said ARTHUR R. SPEER, have hereunto set my hand.
ARTHUR R. SPEER.
