To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I James T. SARGENT, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Guyahoga and State of Ohio, a citizen of the United States, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Washboards, of which improvements the following is aspecification. i

The invention described herein relates to certain improvements in washboar ds in which the brandboard and soap supporting shelf or ledge are formed integral with each other and are combined with a proteeter; a drainage curtain adapted to direct the water flowing from the soap-ledge or shelf down over the rubbing face. I i The invention is hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a washboard having my improvementapplied thereto; Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same, the plane of section being indicated by the line II-II Fig. 1; Fig. 3- is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing the application of my improvement to double faced washboards; Fig; 4 is a sectional view indicated by the line IVIV Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a detail view showing the flange along the sides of the 'Washboard and the manner in which the latter is supported by the legs or side bars. Fig. 6 is a view similar to Figs. 2 and 4, illustrating a further modification of my improvement.

In the practice oi my invention the legs 1, head piece 2, cross bar.3 and back board 4 are formed in the usual -or any suitable manner. The brand board 5 is formed of a sheet of metal of a width at little greater than the distance between the inner walls of the legs, so that the edges of the sheet will project into saw kcrfs in said legs and be thereby supported. It is preferred that the edges of the brand board portion should be turned up as at 6, thesaw kerls being widened so that this turned-up'portion 6 together with the brand board .propcr will form a gutter directing the water flowing into the saw kerf down onto the curtain below the shelf, thus preventing any retention of Water in the saw kerf and the consequent injury to the board. The sheet forming the brand board 5 may be made of sufficient length to permit one end being turned over to form a protector '7 and its opposite end turned over to form a soap ledge orsupport 8. The ends of the protector portion in the construction shown in Figs.- 1 and 2 project into saw-kerfs in the legs immediately below the head piece 2 thereby supporting the protector as against downward fiexure.

ing in to a rabbet or groove in the front of the cross bar and extending up along the front face of the cross bar behind the brand board. The upper j edge of this drainage curtain may'either have a spring bearing against the back wall of the-brand board as shown in Fig. 2, being held inpositionby thesaw l rerfs in the inner walls of the legs or. may besecuied to the brand board by rivets or otherwise as shown in Figs. 4 and 6.

This drainage curtain which extends from the upper" end of the rubbing face back under the perforated soap lodge or support to the back of the brand board will servetodirect any water from the brand board space or dripping from the soap down over the rubbing face.

It has-heretofore been customary and considered desirable to direct the water draining from the soap or the washboardfthe drainage openings being usually in line with the upper edge of the cross piece. It has been found that this Water thus flowing over the soap or draining away therefrom carries away a considerable splashing up into the brand board space, to the back oi portionof the soap which can be usefully employed in washing.
