CHECK-BOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 666,021, dated January 15, 1901.
Application filed October 29, 1900. Serial No. 34,698. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES S. MCMULLIN, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Check-Books, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in check-books, the object being to bind a series of check-blanks and memoranda-sheets alternately with each other and in such manner as to enable the same to be carried in a small pocket, such as an ordinary vest-pocket.
To this end the invention consists in the combination and formation of a check-book, as hereinafterfully described, and pointedout in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is an isometric view of my improved check-book opened and showing the alternate arrangement of the check-blank and memorandaleaves and also the fold of the check-blank leaves. Fig. 2 is an enlarged isometric view of fragmentary portions of a series of leaves, showing the stubs of the check-blanks and portions of the memoranda-leaves in their position assumed when bound together. Fig. 3 is an isometric view of one of the detached checks.
My invention consists, essentially, of a series of folded check-blank sheets 1 and a second series of memoranda-sheets 2, arranged in alternate relation to each other and bound together at their transverse edges for forming a narrow elongated check-book adapted to be carried in an ordinary vest-pocket for use at any time when desired. In order to protect these sheets from undue soiling or wear, I preferably bind the same in a suitable case or cover 3, which also gives a substantial and neat appearance to the pad.
The sheets 1 and 2 may be of any desired form or size, are preferably rectangular in forn1,and are of substantially uniform length, the sheets 2 being elongated and suitably printed on one side with such memorandaheadings as may be desired. The sheets 1 are also suitably printed on one side with the usual headings for check-blanks, are practically twice the width of the sheets 2, and are folded at their longitudinal centers from end to end, each therebyforming a double sheet united at one of their longitudinal edges and formed when folded of substantially the same dimensions as the sheet 2. These sheets 1 are usually provided with transverse perforations 4 in proximity to their binding edges, but separated a sufficient distance from said edges to clear the binding and permit the body of the check-sheet to be readily detached at the perforations when desired.
Prior to binding the sheets 1 are folded at their longitudinal centers. The sheets 2 are then arranged in alternate relation to the sheets 1, with their printed faces adjacent to the printed portions of the sheets 1, indicating the payee, payor, amount, &c., and the transverse binding edges of the sheets are then suitably alined and securely bound in a neat and compact pad with the cover 3. It is thus apparentthat the obverse sides of the sheets face each other, the sheets 1 being printed in such manner that the less important mattersuch as the date, name of bank, &c.appears on the reverse side, but when detached from its stub and unfolded, as seen in Fig. 3, presents the usual form for checkblanks. When writing out a check upon one of the blank sheets 1, the memoranda referring to said check is readily placed upon the exposed or printed face of the adjacent sheet 2, and the folded check is then detached from its stub and unfolded, thus retaining in book form the memoranda-sheets, which may be filed away and preserved for future reference,
The operation of my invention will now be readily understood upon reference to the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A check-book comprising a series of check-blank leaves and memoranda-leaves alternating with each other and having corresponding ends bound to each other, said check-leaves being of substantially twice the width of the latter leaves and folded on their longitudinal centers and perforated transversely for the purpose described.
2. A check-book comprising a series of check-blank leaves printed on one side and each folded longitudinally upon itself and provided with transverse perforations near one In witness whereof I have hereunto set m y end, a second series of memoranda-leaves alhand this 25th day of October, 1900. ternatin with the folded leaves and also printed En one side, said leaves of each series CHARLES lVICMULLIN 5 being bound together at one of their trans- Witnesses:
