SAFETY-CHECK.
menses,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr, 3, l ll'lu Application filed April 19, 1916. serial No. 92AM.
To all whom it may canoe I a:
Be it known that I, JAMns B. Ronnnrson, a citizen of the United. States, and a resident of Bushnell, county of l/lcDonough, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety- Checks, of which the following is a specilication.
My invention has relation to warrants, checks and the like, having stubsfrom which they are adapted to be deta-ghed, and to a suitable holder for carrying a pad of checks that is provided with means to assist in do taching the checks, and also has a suitable "pocket for the storage of the stubs after the checks have been severed.
More particularly, my invention relates to means for preventing the tampering with or the raising of a warrant or check to an amount in excess of the amount to which it is drawn. Divers methods have been employed for this purpose, but comparatively few of them successfully accomplish the ob jects for which they are designed, or are of such nature as to'make them expensive to manufacture and the price prohibitive to the average bank depositor. It is one of the objects of my invention to provide a safety check or warrant that is comparatively inexpensive to manufacture and is capable of easy manipulation so that it may be readily used by persons without the necessity of in dependent tools. In carrying out my invention, it is one of my objects to provide a check that cannot be raised after being drawn, without destroying the body of the warrant or check, thus rendering the same non-negotiable.
i prefer to accomplish the divers objects of my invention by the means and-in the manner hereinafter fully described and as more particularly pointed out in'the claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein- Figure 1 is a plan of the check pad and holder, embodying my invention, the latter having one flap folded over'in position to shear or tear off a check.
Fig. 9; is a longitudinal edge view thereof.
Referring to the drawings, which disclose a preferred form of my invention, similar reference'characters are employed to indi catethe same parts throughout the drawings. In these drawings, referring more particularly to Fig. 1, it will be seen that the checks are held in a holder that preferably comprises a flat piece of flexible material, 5, of substantiallv T-shape. The shorter or lateral members, 6, 6, of this body, 5, form the flaps that are adapted to be folded over the folded checks and secured. together by the usual snap or glove fastener, 7. lhe longer or main member, 8, of the body, 5, isprovided with a shallow pocket, 9, into Which the stubs, 10, of the checks are adapted to be inserted as soon as each check is detached, said member, 8, carrying upon its outer free end a suitable straight edge, 11, of metal or other stiff material, so that the same may be brought into contact with the uppermost check and the latter torn from the stub at the proper place.
The checks are preferably assembled in the usual book form or pad, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, and are secured in any suitable manner to the holder, so that the checks themselves may be unfolded to extend mostly beyond the edge of the holder, In printing the check and stub, the usual negotiable form of check is employed, and at the end of each check form is provided an extension upon which suitable notations are printed, similar to those shown in the drawings, directing the payee not to honor the check for over a particular amount, each line of notation representing an amount exceeding the preceding amount by $5.00, or any other amount desired. The line of notations, 13, nearest the checlr or warrant reads: Not over one dollar and is so placed upon the body of the check that when the straight edge, 11, is placed between this notation and the next succeeding higher notation, the body of.the check will not be de stroyed. However, should an attempt be made to raise the amount of the check, which would require the detachment of the safety extension at the lefthand edge, this notation, 13, would necessarily have to be removed by tearing it fromv the body of the check along the line, it. This would destroy the order portion or authority of the bank to pay the check and render the same of no value.
While l have illustrated and described a specific manner of carrying out my invention, I do not desire to be limited to the precise construction herein disclosed, for it is obvious that slight changes may be made without materially departing from the spirit thereof, and I wish it to be understood that minor changes are possible and contemplated tltl lid

as'included within the scope of my invention as expressed in the appended claim.
What I claim is: ,A safety check or warrant comprising a I 5 blank having a negotiable form thereon and a series of amounts disposed in parallel lines at substantially right angles to the longitudinal edge thereof and adjacent one end of said form, the line of amounts farthest 10 from the end of the form upon which the same is printed being extended into and over the authority to pay, said amounts being adapted to be detached from the blank except the amount nearest the negotiable form whereby when the latter amount is detached 15 the authority to pay the check is defaced and destroyed. a
