COMBINED SNAP-HOOK AND BUCKLE.
.SPECIFEGATION rforming part of Letters Patent No. 665,279, dated January 1, 1901.
Application filed July 28, 1900. Serial No. 25,168. (No model.)
T0 all LUZ/writ it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEVE STAcKHoUsE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fields, in the parish of Oalcasieu and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and useful Oombined Snap-Hook and Buckle, ot' which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in combined snap-hooks and buckles; and the object is to provide a simple and improved construction of snap-hook and buckle in which the movable member of the hook may be conveniently and readily operated to open or close the hook and to securely hold the same closed and in which the strap may be readily attached or removed from the buckle.
With the above object in View the invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described, particularly' pointed out in the claims, and clearly illustrated by the accompanying; drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective View of my improved snap-hook and buckle; Fig. 2, a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the same; Fig. 3, a perspective view of the strap removed and the swinging member of the hook moved outwardly to open the hook, and Fig. 4 a rear elevation. l
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, A designates the hook, having a frame B formed integral with the shank thereof. The rear wall of the frame is formed with a slot O, having the side walls thereof centrally notched, as at D. Secured between the side bars of the frame at the forward end thereof is a.transversely-extending partition E, formed with a central transverse slot F. Y
The swinging member is formed with a flat plate G, occupying the space between the partition E and the rear wall of the frame and projecting from said frame to form a handle portion H. notches of the slot C, said notches constituting a fulcrum upon which the swinging member moves when pressure is applied to the handle portion, the notches being of sufcient size to permit this swinging movement of the handle member. At the forward end of said plate is a centrally-projecting spur I, which extends through the transverse slot,
vwith the inner face of the rear wall. upon plate G is a locking member L, having This plate rests in the side said spur being curved upwardly and forwardly and at its upper forward end engaging in a seat J, formed in the extremity of the hook member. The swinging member is prevented from moving forwardly by contact of the forward end of the plate G with the partition and from moving rearwardly by pins K, extending therefrom and contacting Sliding at its forward end a locking-head M, entering the transverse slot in the partition when the locking member is moved forwardly and preventing outward movement of the swinging member. This locking member slides in a loop N, carried by the plate, and at its rear end is formed with an outwardly-extending projection O. The handle portion of the swinging member being disposed centrally in the slot of the end wall of the frame, space is provided on each side of said handle portion to receive the strap P. Said strap is passed through the space on the under side of the handle portion and extends forwardly, being provided with an elongated slot Q to receive the spur I. The strap is then brought rearwardly and passed through the opening on the outer side of the handle portion, while the projection O of the locking member is inserted in one of the openings Rof the strap.
From the above description it will be understood that a pull upon the strap in one direction withdraws the locking member from the slot in the partition and permits the spur to move outwardly when pressure is applied to the handle portion of the swinging member, so that the hook maybe disengaged from the ring to which it is attached.. A pull upon Y t-he strap in the opposite direction causes said locking member to move forwardly until the head thereof engages in the vertical slot of the partition, thus wedging the spur in position and closing the hook.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
l. In a snap-hook the combination with a hook member and a swinging member, of a strap, and a locking member for said swinging member, actuated by said strap, substantially as described.
2. In a snap-hook, the combination with a IOO hook melnber, of' a swinging member closing said hook member, asliding locking member for said swinging member, and a movable strap connected with said sliding locking member, substantially as described.
3. In a combined snap-hook and buckle, the combination with a hook member, of a swinging member closing said hook, and a slidinglockingmemberforholding said Swinging member in position closing the hook, substantially as described.
4. A com bined snap-hook and buckle, comprising a hook member, a frame carried by said hook member, a swinging member positioned in said frame and having` a spur closing the hook and a handle portion projecting from the frame, a locking member for said swinging member and a strap movable in said frame and connected with the locking member, substantially as described.
5. A combined snap-hook and buckle, coniprising a hook member, a slotted frame carried by said hook member having a slotted partition, a swinging member having a spur projecting through said slotted partition and closing the hook and a handle portion projecting through the slot of the frame, a locking member slidably mounted ou said swinging member and provided with a head at one end adapted to be projected into the slot of the partition and hold said swinging member in position closing the hook, and at its opposite end with an outwardly-extending projection, and a movable strap having an opening receiving said projection of the locking member, substantially as described.
