To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that LOTTO RANGNOW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State ofPennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements` in Dowel-Pins and Fasteners for Trunks, of which the is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved dowelpin and fastener for trunks, and relates to that following classof dowel-pins in which the same are divided into two members, one of said members being carried by the lid of the trunk and havingformed thereon a pin, and upon the other `of a spring to hold the said parts locked.
A further object of my invention is to provide a means of unlocking the fastening mechanism and of causing the members to spring apart and remain unlocked until the lid of the trunk is lifted.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a' front elevation of a trunk,'showing my improved dowel-pin and fastener applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view as.. on line 2 2, Fig. l, on a larger scale. Fig. 3 is a similar-view showingthe parts in a different position. Fig. I isa sectional View on line 4 1l, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the parts-detached.
In the drawings, A refers to the lid of a trunk, and vB the body ofa trunk. To the lid A is attached the upper m'ember C of the' dowel-pin, carrying a dowel-pin. C', having formed on its lower end a shoulder c, projecting rearwardly ortoward the trunk. A handle or lift C2 also forms a part of the upper member C. The upper member C is attached to the lidfof the trunk by means of rivets c a and c c. The rivets ce pass through the lid of the trunk, while the rivets d a only pass through the valance-strip A2, which is secured to the lid by rivets c3. The object of this is to hold u1@ down-pin in a vertical 11neficient flexibility to allow it to be forced over a projection in the fastening mechanism, as described later; The lower member D, which is larged portion d, forming a socket to receive the dowel-pin C.' As shown in Fig. 4, said lower member D is provided with flanges D2 on its outer edges, which form a recess adapted to receive a plate E. Apel-tures are formed in the said plate E, which aline with apertures in the lower member to receive rivets f, by which the plateEand the lower member D arerigidly secured 'to the body of the trunk. Within the socket formed in the enlarged porfrom a pin d2, which passes through the plate E and holds said plate and the lower member D together. On the said plate E is a struckup portionv E', which forms a projection E2, which projects forwardly to engage the shoulder c on the doWel-pin C. The said Struckup portion E forms a cam-surface E3, which forces the pin C out of the vertical line when entering the saidv socket. A spring G is held within the said socket by means of said pin d2. This spring is only in action when the dowelpin C is entering or leaving the socket, as shown in Fig. 3. When the dowel-pin C has dropped into place over the projection E2, as shown in Fig. 2,`the springG will be released and will notV exert any pressure against the said dowel-pins, which will be held in engagement with the said projection by means of the rivets and valance-strip carried by the lid A. `Should the Valance-strip A2 fail to hold the dowel-pin C in its proper verticalposition, the said spring G will prevent it from becoming disengaged from the projection E2. The lower end of the dowelpin C is provided with curved surfaces which facilitate the movement of the dowel-pin C/ into and out of engagement with the di'erent parts.
The lower member D is providedA with downwardly-projecting walls H and H to protect the latch from any accidental blow. It will be seen that in 'my improved dowel-pin and fastener the parts Will remain locked without the action of any spring. The spring is only in action when the dowel-pin is being forced into place or being forced out of engagement with the projection by means of the latch, and therefore it will not lose its vitality as it would if under constant tension. Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent-V 1. The combination of an upper member carrying a dowel-pin with a shoulder formed thereon, a lower member having a projection to engage said doWel-pin, a latch to disengage said dowel-pin, and a spring adapted to force the said doWel-pin from said lower member, substantially as described.
2. The combination of an upper member, a dowel-pin carried by the same, a shoulder formed on said dowel-pin, a lower member having a socket formed therein, a plate having a projection formed thereon, a pin secu ring said plate to said lower member, walls projecting downwardly from said lower member, a latch pivoted on the latter pin and a spring secured in said lower member, substantially as described.
3. rIhe combination of an upper member, carrying a dowel-pin having a shoulder formed thereon projecting rearwardly, a lower member having a socket formed therein, a plate to complete said socket, Said plate having a projection extending forwardly, a latch to disengage said dowel-pin from said projection, and a spring to force said dowel-pin upwardly when acted upon by said latch and also to prevent the accidental disengagement of said dowel-pin and said projection, substantially as described.
