PORTABLE LAMP BRACKET.
(Application filed Jan. 15, 1900.)

'ilNrrEn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HAROLD W. SHONNARD, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO JAMES & JONES AND JAMESJONES, JR, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PORTABLE LAM P-BRACKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 665,140, dated January 1, 1901.
Application filed January 15, 1900; Serial No.1,428. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HAROLD W. SHONNARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in Portable Lamp-Brackets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates particularly to portable brackets for electric desk-lamps. Heretofore electric desk lamps have not been adapted to be readily attached to or detached from a desk, and the light connected thereto has not been capable of quick adjustment; and the object of myinvention is to overcome these difficulties.
In carrying out my invention I provide a plate to which is connected a spring coil and arm, the said parts being adapted to receive between them the narrow shelf, partition, or
other part of a desk, and a pivoted coupler is,
connected to one end of the said plate, the said coupler having connected to it the keysocket, lamp, and shade. The coupler being pivoted to'the end of the plate and adapted to swing makes it possible to change the position of the light, so that the same may be directed as desired by the party using the same. The coil of the spring is preferably connected to a support-bar secured to a yoke,
which yoke is riveted to the plate, and the coil of the spring while exerting sufficient pressure upon the arm of the spring to act as a clip relieves the arm of undue strain and makes the parts sufficiently yielding to receive between them a greater or less thickness of shelf or partition.
In the drawings, Figure l is an elevation representing my improvement, showing in The plate a is preferably of heavy sheet metal, with one end 0t twisted at right angles to the plate a and perforated. The yoke 17 is secured by rivets 2 to the plate at adjacent to the twisted end a thereof. A spring=coil c has its outer portion projected as a bent arm 0, and itsinner portion is received in a slot in asupport-bard, which extends transversely across and through the yoke b. The respective ends of the bar d are upset so as to bind the same and the parts of the yoke together, the coil 0 being between the parallel parts of the yoke, with the arm 0 in line with the plate a. A coupler e is pivoted at 3 to the twisted end a of the plate a, and said coupler is made hollow at its free end and circumferentially threaded at 4:, and the key-socketf is adapted to be connected to or screwed onto the threaded end 40f the coupler, the electric wires passing to said key-socket preferably extending through the hollow portion of the coupler, as shown in Fig. 1.
The lamp h and the half-shade tare of usual construction, as is also the key socket f. Fig. 1 shows the normal position of the parts and their relation to the shelf or partition of a desk, and the pivot 3 applies sufficient tension between the coupler e and the end a of the plate to maintain the position of the lamp, 7 5 7 its shade, and socket with reference to the plate a and the parts connected therewith, and while the plate a and the spring-arm a receive between them,or, in other words, pass over, the edge of a desk shelf or partition the said socket, lamp, and shade may be swung up or down on the pivot 8, so as to adjust the light as may be desired by the user.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a portable lamp-bracket, the combination with a plate twisted at one end and perforated, of a coupler and a pivot-screw for connecting the same to the twisted end of the plate, the said coupler being adapted for connection to the key-socket of a lamp, and a spring acting in connection with the said plate as a clip to hold the bracket in place, substantially as set forth.
2. In a portable lamp-bracket, the combination with a plate twisted at one end and 5 perforated, of a yoke connected to the said plate, a spring coil and arm connected to the said yoke, the said arm being in line with the said plate and adapted to receive between them the shelf or partition of a desk, and a coupler pivoted to the twisted end of the plate and adapted to receive the key-socket of a lamp, substantially as set forth.-
3. The 00111 bination with the plate a having a twisted perforated end a, of a yoke b riveted to the said plate adjacent to ihe twisted end, a spring-coil c and spring-arm c integral with each other, a support-bar d to which the inner end of the spring-coil is connected, the said bar passing through the said yoke and secured thereto, and the arm 0 being in line with the plate a, and a pivoted coupler e c011- nected by a pivot-screw 3 to the twisted end ct of the plate and adapted to swing on the said pivot and to be connected to the keysocket of an electric lamp, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
4:. In a portable lamp-bracket, the combination with a plate and means for connecting the key-socket of a lamp, of a yoke connected to the plate, a slotted support-bar extending transversely of the yoke, a spring-coil connected to the support-bar and an arm connected to the spring-coil in line with the said plate, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
Signed by me this 23d day of December,
HAROLD W. SI-IONNARD. Witnesses:
WILLIAM N. RAPP, GEO. W. BURCHETT.
