Description

S. SINGER. DEVICE FOR ADJUSTING SUSPENDED ELEGTRIO LAMPS.
APPLIOKTIONTILED JAN. 3, 1911.

, UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL SINGER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
DEVICE FOR ADJUSTING SUSPENDED ELECTRIC LAMPS.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, SAMUEL SINGER, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Adjusting Suspended Electric Lamps, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to devices for adjusting electric incandescent lamps suspended by means of cords, and the ob ect thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is attached to, or connected with, a suspending cord, and which may be used in connection with cords of this class of any desired size, and which is also simple in construction and operation, and by means of which the lamp, or the height thereof, may be quickly and easily adjusted whenever desired.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in whlch the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters 111 each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a view showing an ordinary incandescent lamp suspended by means of a cord in connection with which my improved adjusting device is employed; Fig. 2 a side view of the adjusting device detached and showing the parts in a different position and on an enlarged scale; Fig. 3 a view similar to Fig. 2 but showing the parts in section and showing said parts in the position shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 4 a view looking in the direction of the arrow w in Fig. l and on an enlarged scale; and, Fig. 5 a section on the line 55 of Fig. 3 and showing the parts in full lines in the position shown in said figure, and in dotted lines in the position shown in Fig. 1.
My improved adjusting device a is preferably approximately circular in form and comprises a main part a and supplemental part Z). The main part a is provided at one side with two parallel recesses a which are rectangular in cross section, and which form projecting side arms a and a central projecting member a which is also preferably rectangular in cross section, and the supplemental part b is yoke-shaped in form, said part being provided with two parallel Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed January 3, 1911.

projecting arms 6 which are adapted to enter the recesses a in the part (E, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
The part a is provided with a central transverse bore a which extends through the central projecting member a of said part and through the cross head portion of the yoke-shaped member Z2, and the end portion of the bore a within the body of the part a is enlarged to form a spring chamber a and passed through the bore a and into, or through the cross head portion of the yoke-shaped member 5 is a rod 0, the head 0 of which is movable in and through the spring chamber a, and wound on the rod 0 within the spring chamber a is a spiral spring (Z which bears on the head 0 of the rod 0 and on the wall at the inner end of the spring chamber 0 and which normally serves to hold the yoke-shaped member b in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
One end of the rod 0 is screwed into the yoke-shaped member 6, in the form of con struction shown, but said rod may be secured in said member 6 in any desired manner, and the member I) may be rotatable on said rod, if desired. With this construction it will be seen that the yoke-shaped member may be pulled out and partially turned as shown in Fig. 2, and in this position of the parts, said yoke-shaped member presses on, or rests on the central projecting member a of the part (4 this operation being possible by reason of the fact that the transverse dimensions of said projecting member a of the part a are greater in one direction than the corresponding dimensions of the space between the arms 6 of the part b.
I have also shown at e in Fig. 1, the suspending cord of an ordinary electric lamp f, said cord 6 being suspended as shown at g, in the usual manner, and from a ceiling or other support, and in attaching the adjusting device a; to the cord 6 all that is necessary is to pull out the yoke-shaped member 6 and turn it into the position shown in Fig. 1, after which the cord 6 is folded to form a loop 6 through which the part Z2 and the projecting central member a of the part a are passed, after which the member I) of the adjusting device is turned at right angles to the position shown in Fig. 2 and released, and the spring a operates to draw the member Z) into the position shown in Figs. 1 and 3, in which the ends of the arms 12 of the member 6 press on the cord 6, or both sides of the loop 6 thereof, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 4, and the force of the spring a is sufficient to hold the lamp f at any desired point of adjustment, and when it is desired to lower said lamp all that is necessary is to pull downwardly thereon, and when it is desired to raise said lamp, all that is necessary is to pull on one side of the loop 6 My improved form of adjusting device is adapted for use in connection with, or may be applied to suspending cords of any size or transverse dimensions, the size or trans verse dimensions of the suspending cord being limited only by the transverse dimensions of the recesses 64 in the part a of the adjusting device, and my improved adjusting device may be attached to, or connected with, or detached from the suspending cord at any time without detaching said cord from its hanger or support, and without detaching the lamp from said cord.
My improvement may also be made of any preferred material and is preferably made of rubber, fiber or other non-conducting material.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An adjusting device for use in connection with a suspending cord, said device consisting of a block composed of a main part and a supplemental part, one of said parts being provided with two recesses between which is a projecting member, and the other part being provided with arms adapted to enter said recesses and between which is a space into which said projecting member passes and in which it fits closely, said parts being connected by a rod passing through the main part and its projecting member and into the supplemental part, and a spring mounted in one of said parts and operating in connection with said rod for holding said parts in their operative position, the projection being of greater thickness in one direction than in the other whereby the supplemental part may be drawn outwardly and partially rotated and be supported in its outdrawn position by the central projecting member of the main part.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 31st day of December 1910.
SAMUEL SINGER.
