NATHAN I". MATHEWSON, OF BARRING'ION, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND lNATHANIEL GRANT, OF THE CITY OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.

TO ALL WIIOM IT MAY CONOERN:
Beit known that I, NATHAN F. MA'rnnwsoN, of Barrington, in the county of Bristol, and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and improved Fastening for 'indow-Blinds; and I do hereby declare that the following specification, taken in connection with the drawings, making a part of the same, is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of'a blind with the improvement attached.
Figure 2 is a front elevation ofthe same.
Figures 3 to 8 are detailed parts of the fastening and the appropriate catches.
The purpose of my invention is'to produce a fastening for outside window-blinds or shutters, which, while acting to fasten against the side of tle house in the usual waY a blind that is folded back, shall, when the blind is closed against the window, not admit of being unlatehed from the outside, and thus afford additional security to a house where open windows are protected only by a blind.
The improvement consists in making the latch which fastens the blind when it is closed independent of the latch which fastens the blind when it operated upon the inward side of thehlind, n
which holds the blind shut. I
In the accompanying drawings it will be seen that A, (fig. 4), is tne portion to which the latches are attached.
It is .composed Aof a face-plate, a, the central portion b of which is raised so as to a'ord space for the accommodation of springs, as shown in fig. 3, which are to keep the latches engaged with their respective catches in the well-understood way. Both latches are hinged upon the pin c, and both can be worked froml the inward side of the blind by the finger-levers d and e, iigs. 1 and 2. The latch B, which fastens the blinfl when the latter is closed against the window-sash, does not extend through the cross-bar C of the blind, and consequentljr when the same is engaged with the catch D, figs. 1 and 8, located upon the window-stool, it cannot be unfastened by a. person from the outside. The latch E extends through thc cross-bar C and a proper face-plate, F, iig. 1, and is operated to secure the blind, when thrown open, on the same principle as Athe fastenings in common use.
The improvement can readily be apiplicd to any bliud, whether provided'with other fastenings or not, and in addition to its useful ciect, presents, as seen in lig. 2, an entirely neat appearance. v
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The improved fastening for blinds described, consisting of two independent latches B and E, in combina; tion, and arranged to engage with appropriate catches, substantially as set forth.
