Description

f UNITED STATES P TENT OFFlCE C WILLIAM Q-JomvsON, or WAUKON, IOWA.
HAM E-CLIP.
I srn'orrrcarron roi in j m of Letters Patent No. 664,411, dated. December 25, 1900.
Application filed May 12, 1900.
.Waukon, in the county of Allamakee and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hallie-Clips; and I do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description'of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertaius to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements involved in the construction of a harness attachment.
'The object of myinvention is to provide a hame-clip which may be very readily secured in its operative position upon the hame, the peculiar construction of my clip beingsuch as to form the most perfectadjustment of the relation of the tug to the hame.
By the use of myinvent-ion the tug can be readily connected with the. hame in such a manner as to dispose the draft properly upon the shoulders of the animal whether the animal be large or small.
Other objects and advantages will be made fully apparent in the following specification, considered in connection with the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l is a perspective view showing my attachment in its operative position upon a hame. Fig. 2 is aside elevation thereof, showing another disposition of the tug. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the tug adjusted so that it will be secured in the upper portion of my hame-clip, and Fig. 4 is a vertical section of my clip and the hame to which it is secured.
Briefly stated, my invention consists in an attachment for the hame by means of which the tug can be adj ustably secured in position with respect to the hame either directly or by means of the usual link, which latter is permanently secured to the end of the tug.
In order to conveniently refer to the several parts of my invention and their cooperating accessories, numerals will be employed, of which 1 indicates a hame of the usual or any preferred construction, while 2 is the body portion of my hame-clip, which is so formed that it will snugly receive and encircle the hame, the free end or anchoring-ter- Serial No. 16,543. \N'dm'odei.)
' side of the hame, said terminal 3 being preferably tapered, so that it will present no objectionable obstruction to the collar with which the hame is designed to cooperate. The outer end of the body portion terminates in the right-angled extension 4, which is designed to rest securely against the outer edge 5 of the hame, the entire clip or body portion thereof being permanently securedio the hame in any preferred way, as by the eyewise secured to the upper and lower ends of the section 4 are the permanentlylocated eyes or lugs 8, provided with vertically-disposed apertures designed to receive the anchoring-bolt 9. Located intermediatethe lugs 8 are the apertures 10 and 11, each lieing preferably diamond-shaped,substantially as shown, and designed to receive the head 1 12, formed on the anchoring-stem 13 of the removable eye 14, and it is obvious that by entering the head 12 within one of the apertures 10 or 11 and turning the eye 14 so that it is disposed in a horizontal plane said eye= will be securely anchored in position ready to receive the bolt9.
By reference to Fig. 1 and other views it will be seen that the bolt 9 is protected against undue wear and strain by means of the antifriction rollers or collars 15.
By reference to Fig. 3 it will be seen that the tug, as indicated by the numeral 16, may be connected directly to my improved clip by entering the bolt 9 through the usual loop end of the tug, thus avoiding the necessity of using the usual metallic eye -section 17, as shown in Fig. 2. In Fig. 3 the tug is shown as being disposed in the upper end of the clip,
thus enabling an adjustment of the relative relation of the tug and clip to be made to accommodate a small draft-animal. In Fig. 1
the lower eye has been removed, thus en-- v p The antifriction-rollers are provided with three diflerent points of adjustment are provided for the tug. It will be further obvious that any preferred number of eyesorlugs 14 may be provided for the clip, thus increasing the capacity of the device for adjustment.
very cheaply and expeditiously manufactured, and the complete device may be quickly secured in its operative position upon the hame by providing a suitable aperture for thebolt 6 and screwing the end of saidv bolt in the hame-body.
It is obvious' that instead of providing the head 12 upon the stem 13 said stem may be threaded, and thus adapted to enter suitablythreaded apertures in the section 4.
It will be understood that various changes may be made in producing my improved hame-clip without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I therefore wish to com.- prehend in this application all substantial equivalents and substitutes. Believing that the construction and use of my invention have been fully apprehended from the foregoing specification, further reference to the details thereof is deemed unnecessary.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1'. The herein-described hame-clip comprising a body portion 2 having upon one side an anchoring-terminal 3 and upon the other side a right-angled extension i; a lug permanently secured to each end of said extension 4; aplurality of removable lugs eachhaving an eye and a stem the latter being adapted to be received by an aperture in the extension 4; a
' bolt passing through eyesin the fixed and removable lugs, all substantially as specified and for the purpose set forth.
2. A hame-clip comprising a body portion having an anchoring-terminal 3 and a rightangled extension 4, the latter being provided at each end with stationary lugs having ver-. tically=disposed apertures; aplurality of lugs adapted to be anchoredin apertures located means to attach said body to the hame andav right-angled extension formed on said body having a stationary lug at each end provided with an aperture; in combination with a plurality of removable lugs each having an eye and an anchoring-stem, the latter being provided with a cross-head adapted to be received by a vertically-disposed slot in said rightangled extension whereby when said Stem is entered in said slot and the lug is turned onequarter around, the apertures in the end of the lug will register. with the apertures in the stationary lugs and receive a bolt by which the end of the tug may be adj ustably secured in place between any two of said lugs substantially as specified and for the purpose set forth. t 1
L A hame-clip and means to secure the same upon the hame, said clip having an upper and lower stationary lug each provided with an aperture, and a plurality of removable lugs and means to adjustably secure said lugs in place whereby the space between one of the stationarylugs and a removable lug may be regulated to receive the end of the tug, all substantially as specified and for the purpose set forth. v
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM C. JOHNSON.
