Be it known that I, NELSON WooDHULL DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Port Jefferson,in the cou nty of Suffolk and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Bottle, of which the following isa full, clear, and exact description. This invention relates to improvements in bottles of the class designed to prevent fraudulent reusage; and the object is to provide a simple device in connection with a bottle that when the bottle is emptied of its original contents will clearly indicate that any refilling or partial refilling is fraudulent, thus aording a safeguard and protection to purchasers; and a further object is to utilize the device as a label or advertising medium within the bottle, making it unnecessary to use labelsr on the exterior of the bottle.
I will describe a bottle embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this speciiication, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding partsin all the iigures.

Referring to the drawings, l designates the body portion of the bottle, and 2 the neck thereof, the said neck and body portion being substantially of the same length. Extended through the neck and nearly to the bottom of the body portion of the bottle is a tube 3, the upper portion of which-that is, the portion within the neck--is provided with annular corrugations 4, which are shown as ratchet-shaped, with the horizontal shoulder at the lower side. The portion of the tube 3 within the body of the bottle may be provided with the name of the bottler, a trade-mark, or any other advertising matter. I have here shown it as provided with the name of the bottler, and the letters forming the same are cut through the Wall of the tube, thus not only serving as an advertising medium, but providing ports for the passage of liquid into the tube.

When the bottle is filled, this safety device 8 is wholly within the neck portion of the bottle, and at its up-` per end it has spring-fingers 9, which are curved outward to engage with the smooth inner surface of the bottle-neck and then turned inward, so their ends may engage with the under sides of the corrugations 4. This tube or safety device 8 will also be provided with any suitable advertising matter, the let ters of which are cut through the material and preferably are arranged with aportion of each letter on one section and a portion on the other section, so that when the parts are separated the label will be practically destroyed.
Surrounding the tube 3 is a ringshaped iioat 10, consisting of cork or other light material, and on the upper side Vof this float the lower end of the tube or safety device 8 rests. I may temporarily secure the lower ends of the sections forming the part 8 together by The tube or safety device 8 is provided with opposite notches 12, in which the plates 6 may engage while the said tube 8 is in its uppermost position, and of course these plates 6 will prevent the removal of said tube 8.
In operation after filling the bottle the tubes 3 and 8 and the float 10 are to be placed in position, as indicated in the drawings, and locked by the plates 6. As the liquid is poured'out the float l0 will move downward with the level thereof, permitting the tube or safety device 8 to move downward, so that the spring-ngers 9 willengage with one of the lower corrugations 4, and this will continue until the bttle is Wholly empty, and when so wholly empty the tube or safety device 8 will move into the body portion of the bottle and the sections will fall apart, as in- IOO fingers practically fill the space between the dicated by dott-ed lines in Fig. 1, destroying the label and the identity of the bottle as an original package.
Should liquid be poured into the bottle while the tube 8 is partially within the neck 2, the fact will be evident, because the liquid so poured in will rise above the bottom of said tube 8, as the tube will be prevented from moving up by its spring-fingers engaging with the corrugations 4. As the springouter surface of the tube 3 and the interior of the bottle, it is obvious that the part 8 after once passing into the body of the bottle cannot be returned to the neck. Ports 13 are provided through the upper end of the tube 3 to permit the passage .of any liquid that might be contained within the space between said tube and the bottle-neck.
Having thus described ymy invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a bottle, a safety device adapted to move by gravity in the neck and to the body of the bottle and to fall apart in the body of the bottle, substantially as specified.
2. In a bottle, a tube extended through the neck portion thereof and having exterior corrugations on its portion within the neck, a safety device movable4 on the tube, the said safety device consisting of a sectional tube adapted to move downward with the lowering of the liquid in the bottle, and spring-iingers on said safety device for engaging with the corrugations.
3. In a bottle, a tube extended through the neck portion thereof and nearly to the bottom of the body portion of the bottle, the part of this tube Within .the neck having annular corrugations, a safety device movable on the tube and consisting of a sectional tube, spring-lingers on the upper end of said safety device .-for engaging with the corrugations, and a float surrounding the first-named tube and adapted to support the safety device, substantially as specified.

5. In a bottle, a tube extended through the neck portion thereof and nearly to the bottom of the body portion, the said tube having' advertising devices at its lower portion, a sectional tube movable on the rst-named tube, means for preventing the upward movement of the sectional tube relatively to the other .tube while any part of the said sectional tube is within the neck of the bottle, and a float movable on the rst-named tube and supporting the sectional tube, substantially as specified.
6. In a bottle, a tube extended through the neck portion of the bottle and into the body portion thereof, means for locking said tube in the bottle, a sectional tube movable on the first-named tube, the said sectional tube having advertising matter, the letters of which provide openings through the wall of -the tube, portions of the letters being on one section while the other portions are on the other section, and means for preventing an upward movement of the sectional tube relatively to the first-named tube, substantially as specilied.
7. In a bottle, a tube extended through the neck portion and into the body thereof, the
part of'said tube within the body having advertising matter, the letters of which form ports, a sectional tube movable on the firstnamed tube, means for preventing an upward movement of the sectional tube relatively to the first-named tube when any portion of said sectional tube is within the neck of the bottle, and means for preventing the withdrawal of either of said tubes from the neck of the bottle, substantially as speGied.
