TENON-I-AND-MORTISE JOINT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 664,050, dated December 18, 1900.
Application iiled October 9, 1900. Serial No. 32,529. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, HENRY S. J oRD'AN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tenon-and-Mortise Joints, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful tenon-and-mortise joints; and the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The objects of this invention are, first, to so construct the tenon and mortise that they will form a strong and durable joint in which the tenon will not become loosened from the mortise, and, second, to forni a tenon with openings which will allow the glue inthe mortise to ll said openings and surround the tenon as the same is driven into the mortise. These objects I accomplish by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows a side elevation of a chairframe or other analogous piece of furniture with one mortise in the side thereof and one mortise in the edge thereof, with portions of the frame cut away, showing the position of the tenon in the mortise. Fig. 2 shows an end View of the tenon, illustrating the form of the tenon and of the curved openings which extend substantially the length of the tenon.

G shows the inortise in the edge of the frame-piece A. The tenon proper is shown by the center piece E and the side cylindrical pieces D D. The cylindrical pieces D D are separated from the center piece E by the curved grooves F F. The mortise is provided with rounded ends in order to fit closely the outer surfacesof the cylindrical portions D. ByV this construction the tenon can be made to fit accurately the mortise, the cylindrical parts giving elasticity to the tenon and enabling the operator to enter the tenon into the mortise easily.
This mortise-and-tenon joint is intended to be used in connection with glue, so as to form a glue-joint, and the openings F F allow a vent of the glue in the mortise, allowing the glueto enter the said openings as the tenon is driven into thev mortise. This construction also causes the glue to spread around the Vtenon and to make a close-fitting and absolutely-perfect tenon-and-mortise joint. The slots F F allow the air to pass out of the mortise, allowing the tenon to be readily driven down to the bottom of the mortise. The glue following the air completely lls the slots with glue, and when the glue sets the tenon has the same strength and rigidity as though it were made of one piece instead of three and is more securely held in place by the glue.
In the drawings I have shown my mortiseand-tenon joints as applied to a chair; but it will be evident that the same may be applied in all cases where a secure mortise-andtenon joint is required.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to have invented, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A mortise-and-tenon joint composed of a mortise having curved ends, the tenon having a center piece E, the cylindrical portions D D separated from the central portions E by means of the curved slots, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the tenon composed of the central portion E, the cylindrical portions D D, slots extending substantially the length of the tenon in combination with the mortise G, all constructed as and for the purpose set forth and described.
