UNITED STATES ATENT FFICE.
CHARLES GALLE, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
PAPER BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 663,963, dated December 18, 1900.
Application filed April 24, 1900. Serial No. 14,158. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES GALLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain improvements in boxes for commercial purposes, more especially paper boxes.
It has for its object to readilyimprovise a box out of a suitably-prepared blank and whichis adapted to be compactly packed for shipment or transportation.
It consists of the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter more fully disclosed and specifically pointed out by the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical cross-section taken through one side of the box and the fastening or joint. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the blank.
Latitude is allowed herein as to details, as they may be changed or varied at will without departing from the spirit of my invention and the same yet remain intact and be protected. In carrying out my invention I provide or make a suitable blank 1, the portions forming the ends 1 of the box having at each edge an upward-projecting hook or lug 2, the normally-upward edge of the hook curving from the top of the box downward to the base of the face edge of the hook-beak, as at 2, the bottom or back edge of said hook being reversely curved from its outer end to its point of conjunction with the edge of said end, as at 2 The portions forming the sides 3 of the box are each provided at each end or edge with a slot 4, suitably indenting said end or edge, said portions having longitudinally-infolding upper edge portions 4 adapted to overlap said portion on the line of said slot. This side portion has a curved, straight, or inclined slit or slot 5, with a straight end extension or terminal slit 5 said curved slit passage upward and inward from the straight extension-terminal and above said slit, parallel therewith, to aid in forming a lock-joint against the accidental separation of the ends and sides of the box. The thus inwardly-received hook or lug 2 is guarded or protected as against being interfered with by the contents of the box by the overlapping or folding portions 4 of the box sides. Again, the upper edges of the ends 1" are each also provided with an infolding portion 6, which, however, is formed with the inner shank portion or extension 4 of the hook or lug 2. By this construction it will be seen that as the infolding portion 6 is turned inward down upon the inside of the box it will carry with it also the thus-formed lateral extension 4!. The blank 1 is also preferably formed at predetermined points, according to the dimension of the box, with scores or creases 7 crosswise of said blank upon the inside, two or more parallel creases being made at the point of each bend. This plan of creasing the material forms a greater angle than otherwise obtainable at the bending-points, whereby the material is prevented from breaking at said points, asisliable to occurin bending simply on the line of a single crease. Thus a blank is formed or constructed adapted to provide for readily or quickly improvising a box and adapted to be expeditiously packed for shipping and wherein the infolding portions of the sides and ends also reinforce the upper edge of the box and protect the locking device against injury from the contents of the box.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As a new article of manufacture, a paper box having at its sides and ends upper edge infolding portions, and each side provided with slits or slots, and a straight slot in its edge, and each end provided with lateral hooks or lugs adapted to engage said end slits or slots, said infolding portions each adapted to engage or be received into said straight slot, and reinforce the upper edges of the box, substantially as set forth.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a paper box having its sides and ends provided with upper edge infolding portions, and its sides provided at each end with a slit or slot and the ends of the box produced with lateral hooks or lugs, to engage said slits or slots, said infolding portions adapted to guard said hooks or lugs and to reinforce the upper edges of the box, substantially as set forth.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a paper box having its sides and ends provided with upper edge infolding portions, and its sides provided at each end with a slit or slot and a straight slot in its edge, and the ends of the box produced with lateral books or lugs, to engage said slits or slots, said infolding portions adapted to guard said hooks or lugs and to reinforce the upper edges of the box and secure a straight upper edge, substantially as set forth.
4. As a new article of manufacture, a pa per box with lateral hooks or lugs at each end, to engage with slits or slots at each side, its sides and ends provided with upper edge infolding portions, the infolding portions of the ends projecting over the sides and adapted to look the infolded portion of the sides against the inner wall of the box, to guard said hooks or lugs and to reinforce the upper edge of the box, substantially as set forth.
5. As a new article of manufacture, a paper box having slitted or slotted sides and infolding sides and ends, the ends having hooks or lugs, to engage said slits or slots, and shank portions or extensions 4 to fold over the sides of the box.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES GALLE.
