`BOILER-lVlAKEFlS SPACER.
SPECIFICATION forming pari'. 0f LetteI'S Patent N O. 663,053, dated December 4:, 19.
Application filed August 30, 1900. Serial No. 28.568. (N0 model.) I
Z'o cir/ZZ whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES J. WANGLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis,iState of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boiler Makers Layer-Outs or Spacers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in devices intended for use in laying out or dividing and space-marking lines to be punched for the insertion of rivets and the like in sheet metal, such as boiler-iron, steel, and similar material; and the object of my invention is to afford a simple and reliable mode of dividing and spacing such lines or material re quired to be punched into any given number of equal parts, and thereby enable the workman to dispense with a tedious process of measuring between points with a compass or dividers, thus saving time and labor. I attain this object by the device shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure I is an illustrationof my spacer, showing it inclined in a position for its minimum spacing. Fig. II is a similar perspective of the same, showing it in a position the reverse of FigrI for its maximum spacing; and Fig. III is an illustration of the same, showing it with its members at right angles to each other in a position for its medium scope for The dotted lines in this figure illustrate ils position in use upon the sheet metal to be marked. Figs. IV and V are cross-sectional views onqlines 4 and 5, Fig. Il, respectively, showing its connections and a mode of fastening, as desired.
In the drawings similar letters and figures refer to similar parts throughout the same.
My device thus illustrated consists of a frame A, comprising two parallel longitudinal parts l and 2, between and to whichare' pivoted at regular intervals of space three or more lateral or connecting parts 3 3 3, provided with holes 7 7 at the ends of each, where they are movably aftixed by the hole-and-pin connections 44., 4 4', and 8 to the parallel parts l and 2 in such a manner as permits of either a right or left hand movement and adjustment of the frame A, in which movements the connecting parts 3 3 3 are placed at right angles to or inclined toward each other on a line or lines running diagonal or at right angles to the parallel connecting parts 1 and 2, which thus approach or recede from each other, as the operator may desire. As a material for the frame I use sheet iron or steel strips, although it is obvious that other materials may be thus employed. In the frame A thus constituted and operating I then draw a line across it upon th'e tlatfaces of the connecting parts 3 3 3, between the parallel parts l and 2, it being essential that said line should run diagonal to said parallel parts l and 2 either upwardly from right to left or downwardly from right to left. I have shown the result of using but one ot' such lines in the drawings, as that is suiiicient to illustrate the object and purposes of my invention. Upon the diagonal line thus drawn and where the same intersects the center of the width of each of the connecting parts 3 3 3 said connecting parts or as manyof them as may be desired more than three are punched or provided with a hole at x Qc, through which the material to be space-marked is thus marked with a pencil or otherwise.
To retain the frame A iixed in any desired spacing-points distance, I provide a clamp or thumb-screw 5 5, Fig. V, by extending one or more of the pivot-pins 8 and threading it, so as to receive and operate the thumb nut or nuts 6 6; but other well-known means may be employed for that purpose.
Having thus described my invention, that which I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a boiler-makers layer-out, or spacer, the movable pivotally-connected frame having two parallel longitudinal parts, to which three or more connecting parts are equally spaced and movably attached near their ends and provided with holes or openings that run across the frame on a line diagonal to the parallel longitudinal parts, substantially in the manner shown and described and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a boiler-makers layer-out, or spacer, the movable pivotally-connected frame having tWo parallel longitudinal parts, to which manner shown and described and for the purthree or more connecting parts are equally poses specied. spaced and movably attached near their1 ends and' provided With holes or openings that run CHAS' J' WANGLER' 5 across the frame on a line diagonal to the par'- In presence of- I allel longitudinal parts in combination with D. B. MOFARLAND, one or more clamps, all substantially in the R. M. FLETCHER.
