TO ALL TO WHOM THESE PRESENTS SHALL COME:
Be it known-that I, J. DEAN BONNEY, of Pembroke, in the county of Plymouth, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Manufacture of Paint-Brushes, and do hereby declare theV following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, due reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, and in whioh- Figure l is a side view of a paint-brush provided with my invention.
Figure Qis a perspective view ot' a metallic strap ofthe invention to be hereinafter described; and
Figure 3, a perspective vie-w of its confining-clasps.
Figure 4 is a` transverse section of the brush with my invention applied. g
This invention is an improvement in that class of paint-brush heads or clasps in which a metallic band is employed for conning the bristles and preventing their spreading out to au injurious extent.
The invention consists in a novel device for confining the metallic band andcompressing it to any desired extent about the bristles, as well as in contracting the mouth of the head when thus surrounding the brush, and forming it with one or more corrugations, in a manner and for the purpose as hereinafter explained.
The ohject'of this invention, besides producing the results above described, is to enable the same head or its eontining-clasps to be used with a number of brushes, and for a great length of time, it being removed from a worn-out brush and applied to a new one7 thus economizing its use and cost.
In theaccempanying drawings, A denotes the mass oi' bristles or body of the brush, 'and a the handle thereof. B is a metallicband, which encompasses the bristles for about one-third their length, its edges being lapped overA one another. The cuter edge of this bandB is formed with one or vmore corrugations I: 6, which has the double eifect of strengthening and stiifening the head when the plate is bent into a circular shape, and of contracting the edge or mouth. of such head about the body of bristles, for the purpose of preventing their spreading ont to an extent to impair Athe eiciency of the brush, which would take placewere the head of equal diameter from end to end. The band or head B is in turn encompassed by' a metallic strap, C, having a lip, c, turned up on each end, at a slight angle toV its sides, and at an acute angle to its periphery, for receiving a cla-sp, d, composed ,of a tapering strip of metal, with two lips formed upon its sides for extending over the ends of thc strap C, the angle of the sides of the clasp oZ being the same as the ends of theV strap C.
In applying my invention the band B is to be first passed around the brush, and its ends overlapped, and while held in this position is to be encompassed by the strap C, which is to be of such a length that its ends shall be separated by a small space, one about corresponding in size with the width of the clasp d. Thedarger end of theclasp oZ is then to be passed over the tips'c c and pushed` towards `the bristles. This will draw the ends of the strap C together, and, as a consequence, contract the strap, and with i't the band B very tightly and securely about the bristles.
After a brush containing the above-described device becomes worn out, the device `may be removed and applied to a new brush with equal benefit. As it is comparatively indestructible, it may be applied to a great numb er of brushes.
Its utility and value will readily recommend themselves to painters, to whom it will chiey'be valuable. I claim the combination, with the removable and adjustable metallic band whieh'surrounds the bristles, of
the clasp and its tapering slide for holding the said band upon the brush, substantially as and for the purposesY set forth.
J. DEAN BONNEY.
