TO ALL TO WHOM THESE PRESENTS SHALL COME:
Be it known-that I, J. DEAN BONNEY, of Pembroke, in the county of Plymouth, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Manufacture of Paint-Brushes, and do hereby declare theV following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, due reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, and in whioh- Figure l is a side view of a paint-brush provided with my invention.

This invention is an improvement in that class of paint-brush heads or clasps in which a metallic band is employed for conning the bristles and preventing their spreading out to au injurious extent.
The invention consists in a novel device for confining the metallic band andcompressing it to any desired extent about the bristles, as well as in contracting the mouth of the head when thus surrounding the brush, and forming it with one or more corrugations, in a manner and for the purpose as hereinafter explained.
The ohject'of this invention, besides producing the results above described, is to enable the same head or its eontining-clasps to be used with a number of brushes, and for a great length of time, it being removed from a worn-out brush and applied to a new one7 thus economizing its use and cost.

In applying my invention the band B is to be first passed around the brush, and its ends overlapped, and while held in this position is to be encompassed by the strap C, which is to be of such a length that its ends shall be separated by a small space, one about corresponding in size with the width of the clasp d. Thedarger end of theclasp oZ is then to be passed over the tips'c c and pushed` towards `the bristles. This will draw the ends of the strap C together, and, as a consequence, contract the strap, and with i't the band B very tightly and securely about the bristles.
After a brush containing the above-described device becomes worn out, the device `may be removed and applied to a new brush with equal benefit. As it is comparatively indestructible, it may be applied to a great numb er of brushes.
Its utility and value will readily recommend themselves to painters, to whom it will chiey'be valuable. I claim the combination, with the removable and adjustable metallic band whieh'surrounds the bristles, of
the clasp and its tapering slide for holding the said band upon the brush, substantially as and for the purposesY set forth.
