SPECIFICATIDN forming part of Letters Patent No. 661,541, dated November 13, 1900.
Application filed June l2, 1900. Serial No. 20,037. (No model.)
1'0 all Inl/ont 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD STEBBINS LA- 'ri-IROP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and 5 State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Combined Toy and Advertising Device, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a combined toy and advertising device; and one object of the invenro tion is to provide a device of this character in representation of a cotton-boll, nut, fruit, or other article which opens and shuts. In the present instance I have shown my invention as applied to a toy cotton-boll, and any portion thereof can be used for advertising purposes.
Another object of the invention is to utilize a sound-producer in connection with the representation for the purpose of attracting atzo tenticn.
\Vith these objects in view the invention consists, essentially, of a stem having an inflatable bulb and sounding device at one end thereof and leaves or other parts connected to the said tube and adapted to hold the cottonpod or other article, the leaves to be adapted to be separated and the pod or other article exposed when the bulb is inflated and contracted to their normal positions when the 3o bulb is deflated, and it will also be understood that as the bulb is deflated the sound will be produced after the fashion of the ordinary balloon. l
The invention consists also in certain details of construction and novelties of combination, all of which will be fully described hereinafter and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming part of this speciiication, Figure l a perspective view of a 4.o device constructed in accordance with myinvention. Fig. is an elevation showing the part-s expanded. Fig. 3 is avertical sectional view. Fig. t is a detail view of the tube and bulb. Fig. 5 is a detail View of one of the leaves, and Fig. (i is adetail perspective view of the collar or sleeve for securing the leaves to the tube.
In carrying out my invention I employ a tube A of wood or other suitable material 5o and having any form of sound producing means at the upper or inner end thereof, said means being ordinarily a thin strip of rubber B. An inflatable bulb C is attached to the upper end of the tube A and inclosing the sound device, as shown. A series of leaves l) are secured to the tube A by means of an elastic sleeve E, which encircles the tube and likewise the stems D of the leaves, said leaves being given any desired shape or configuration, according to the representation desired, and the ends D2 are preferably turned outwardly, as shown, to avoid injury to the parts contained with the loaves. A cotton-pod E is arranged within the leaves in such a inanner that when the bulb is inflated a portion of said pod will be forced out beyond the leaves and the leaves separated, thereby exposing a considerable portion of the pod. When the bulb is deflated, the sound will be produced and all of the parts will resume their normal positions.
Vhile I have shown my invention as applied to acotton-boll, it will be distinctly understood that it can be applied to any other article and the principle remain the same.
It will also be understood that any other special means for separating the leaves and forcing the pod therefrom may be employed, and, if desired, any advertising matter may be placed upon the bulb or upon the leaves or sleeve.
It will thus be seen that I provide a cheap and simple device which can be used as an advertising device or a toy, as preferred.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A device of the kind described comprising a tube having` an iniatable bulb and a sound-producer attached thereto, the leaves connected also to the tube and the pod or other article arranged within the leaves and surrounding the bulb, substantially as shown and described.
2. A device of the kind described comprising a tube having` a sound-producer, and an inflatable bulb arranged at one end, the leaves attached to the tube by means of an elastic sleeve and the pod or boll arranged within the leaves and surrounding the inflatable bulb, substantially as described.
EDWARD STEBBINS LATHROP.
