- TO ALL IVI-IOM IT MAY CONCERN: l.
Be it known that I, ELIAS BROCK, ot' Ellenvillc, `in the countyr of' Ulster, and State'of New York, have invented a. new and improved Machine for Unhairing Hides; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which-- Figure 1 is a side View of my improved machine.
Figure 2 is auend vieii ofthe same.

My invention has for its object to furnish an improved machine for unhairing hides, and scrubbing, 'scour` ing, and washing vleather conveniently, rapidly, and thoroughly. And it consists in the combination of a pair of feed-rollers with the knife-cylinder ol' `an unhairing machine; in arranging the feed-rollers, knife-cylinder, and guide-roller with each other sol that the hides or leather may be drawn over the knife-cylinder in a direction opposite to that in which the surfaceof the said cylinder moving; in the combination of a roller with the frame of the apron, by which thc hide orleather is held down upon the knitecylindcr; and in the arrangement of gearing, by means of which motion is communicated from the knifc-cylinders to the feed-rollers, the whole being constructed and arranged as hereinafter more fully described. Y A is the `frame of the machine, near the middle part of which are formed the bearings for theV journals of the knife-cylinder I3. 'C are the knives or Scrapers, which may be of any desired shape,-and which are attached to the surface of the' cylinder B in a line with its axis. D and E are the feed-rollers, which revolve in bearings in thc frame A, and which are so arranged that the upper side of the upper feed-roller D may be considerably below the upper side of the knife-cylinder B, and so that the upper roller D may be a little nearer the said knife-cylinder B than thc lower` one E. The upper parts of the bearings of the upper roller D are movable, and are held down upon its journals by rubber springs or their equivalent, F is a guide-roller, pivoted to the forward part of the frame A, over which the hidesl or leather are spread, and from which they passA into the machine. G is the frame,.to which the apron I-I is attached. The frame G is pivoted to the upper part of the front side of the frame A, .and it is held down, pressing the hide or leather against the knife-cylinder B by taking hold of the hand-railg. I is a roller, pivoted to the lower ends of the short arms g2, 'projectingdownward from the fra-me G, so that, when the'suid frame G is in the position shown in igiQ, the hide or leather may pass through the machine without touching the-roller I; but when the frame G is4 raised into the position shown in fig. I, the hide or leather will he lifted away from the knife-cylinder B. Motion is communicated to the machine by applying power to the knife-cylinder B, by means of a crank or pulley l, attached to one of l its journals. '.lo` the other journal of said knife-cylinder is attached a small gear-wheel, K, the teeth of which mesh into the teeth of the large gear-wheel L, pivoted to the side of the frame A, and which has a pulley, M, formed upon or securely attached to4 it. N is a. band, which passes around the pulley M and around the pulley O, attached to the journa'lot` one of the feed-rollers D E, which saidjournal has also a gear-wheel, P, attached toit, the teeth of which mesh into the tceth'ot' thc gear-wheel R attached to the journal of the'other feedroller. In. using tlic machine, the pack is passed Vinto it, tied togethery over thc guide-roller F; thence it passes over the roller I, over the knife-cylinder B, and over and around the upper feed-roller D, passing out at the bottom of said machine, the feed-rollers D E drawing the hides over the knife-cylinder B in a direction opposite to that in whichl the surface of said knife-cylinder is moving. The hides, while passing through the machine, are held down by the apron Hand frame G. The apron H may be made of canvas, rubber, leather, or any other suitable material, and should be removably attached to the frame G.
What I4 claim asnew, and-desire to secure by Letters Patent, isy I I. The combination ofthe pair of feed-1'ollers D E with the knife-cylinder B of an unhairing machine,
substantinlly as herein shown and-described, and .for the purpose set forth.`
2'.4 Arranging-.the guide-roller F, knife-cylinder B, and feed-rollers D E, with each other and with the frame A. of the machine, substantially-inthe manner herein shown. and described, so that the hides or leather shall be drawn over the knife-cylinder Bin a direction opposite to that in which the surface of the said Aknifecylinder is moving. i i y 3. The combination of the roller I with the frame G, to which the apron H is attached,'suibstantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth. i l i i 4.V Arranging the gearing-K L yM N O P R substantially in the manner herein shown and described, for the purpose of communicating motion from the knife-cylinder- B to the feed-rollers D E. i l ELIAS BROCK.
