UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN D. HESS AND ISAIAH HESS, OF UNION, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN SORGHUM-STRIPPERS. V
Specificationforming part of Letters Patent No. 59,220, dated October 30, 1866; antedated September 28, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that We, JOHN D. HESS and ISAIAH HESS, of Union,-in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Machine for Stripping the Blades of Sorghum; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact delegs, and in which the axles of the cylinder B' have bearings.
The crank r, having a handle, 8, is attached to the cylinder, and on the opposite end. external to the frame is a pulley, on which the belt 19 runs to give motion to the pulley D 5 and from this pulley the bands or belts 0 0 give motion to the rollers 0. Each roller is supported in aframe, E, (indicated by dotted lines,) which frame rests within grooves of the part of the frame A and by the springs F the pu1- leys are made to press sufficiently to carry the sorghum-canes.
The part H has square orifices, to which the blades n of the cutters G are attached. These cutters are composed of four blades, the cuttin g-edges being beveled from the inside out,
and each blade representing a part of a circle, which, being held together by the elasticity of the blades, form an irregular circle,'through which the canes pass in being stripped. The surface of the cylinder B may be either plain, corrugated, or have a shallow groove directly under the rollers O. The part H, with the cutters G, may be attached to the ordinary sorghum-mill, the rollers of which will perform the same ofiiice as that of the cylinder B and rollers O.
Operation: Thesmall end of the cane is put through the orifice of the cutter until the end passes between the cylinder and rollers which serve to carry the cane through the cutter, removing the blades as it moves along.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination of the cutter-.G with the device herein described for carrying the canes through the cutter, or its attachment to a sorghum-mill, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The arrangement of the frame A, cylinder B, pulley D, rollers O, frame E, spring F,
cutter G, and support H, substantially as described and represented.
JOHN D. HESS. ISAIAH HESS.
