FRANK S. SCHMIDT, OF FORT WVAYNE, INDIANA.
GEARING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 661,157, dated November 6, 1900. A
Application filed February 23, 1300. Serial No. 6,152. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK S. SCHMIDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort WVayne, in the county of Allen and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gearing; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawillustrated in the accompanying drawings, in
which s Figure 1 is a side elevation; Fig. 2, a plan, and Fig. 3 an end view with the suds-box in central section.
Similar numerals of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views.
The suds-box 1 is rectangular in form and is supported between the standards 13 upon trunnions or pivots 5 5' and upon which the suds-box is adapted to tilt.
Upon one of the standards 13 is mounted a casting 6, which supports the pivot 5, and to which is secured the arms 8 of the quadrant 9 by means of a pin 7 and upon which said quadrant may be swung outward. The quadrant 9 is toothed upon its under side and is adapted to be held normally in engagement with the pinion 11 by means of the plate 3, which is mounted upon the pivot 5 and which overreaches the lower part of the quadrantcasting when in the position shown in Fig. 1. The handle 4, attached to said plate, is curved outward, so as to permit the quadrant-casting to swing outward when said handle is swung upward, thus disengaging said quadrant from the pinion 11.
Upon the lid 20 is secured a casting 2, which has a depending end piece 2, which overhangs the side of the suds-box 1 and fits into the casting 12, which is fixed to the said suds-box. The casting 2 supports an oscillating shaft 10, upon the outer end of which is mounted the pinion 11 and uponthe inner end of which is mounted the bevel-gear 17.
The bevel-gear 18 is mounted in the casting 2 and is engaged by the bevel-gear 17 and is I adapted to be driven thereby. The gear 18 has an upwardly-extending stud 19, which plays in the casting 14:, which bridges over the said gear. The sleeve 21 is integral with the gear 18 and depends through the casting 2 and lid 20. The pin-wheel shaft 23 is inserted into said sleeve and is secured into place by the pin 22. The lower part of the shaft 23 has a vane 25, which passes through the pin-wheel 24c, and thus causes the pin- Wheel to turn with said shaft. By tilting the suds-box upon its trunnions the pinion 11 is moved relatively to the quadrant 9, and thereby the shaft 10 is actuated, and in turn the bevel-gears 17 and 1S and the pin-wheel within the suds-box are driven accordingly.
By turning the handle 4 upward the quad- 7 handle 15. I
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination, standards, a tilting receptacle supported' thereby, a toothed quadrant ranging above the side of said receptacle and having depending arms pivoted to one of said standards and adapted to be swung outward, an over-reaching plate pivoted to said standard and adapted to normally hold said quadrant in position, an oscillating shaft mounted upon said. receptacle, a pinion upon said shaft adapted to be engaged by said quadrant, a shaft within said receptacle, and bevel-gear connections between said shafts.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK S. SCHMIDT.
