Be it known that 1, JAMES KYNOCH, elec trical engineer, of the city ofToronto, int-he' county of York, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Frictional Gearing, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in an apparatus for operating and controlling gates or opening bridges; and the object of the invention is to devise a simple and effective means whereby the inertia may be easily overcome and the gate or bridge readily started and swung open or closed'and, in long narrow bridges particularly, without the jerky or Whipping action which is always incident to such a class of bridge; and it consists,essentially, of a suitable drum and driv-- ing-gear connected thereto and journaled in a suitable frame, a friction-gear designedto coact with the drum and having on the end of the spindle thereof a gear-wheel, a suitable motor having a pinion on the end ofthe shaft thereof designed to be in constant meshw'ith the gear-wheel, a suitable lever and shaftand link-joints connecting the shaft to the bearings of the friction-gear, such bearings being located on the end of rocking arms swung on a center on a line with the axis of the driving and being designed to coact with the'friction gear, the parts being arranged and constructed in detail as hereinafter more particularly explained.

A is the bed-plate of my apparatus, which is made of such a form as to suit the requirementso The main portion of the bed-plate is provided with the standards B B and the end portion with the standards '0, upon' which is suitably-bolted the motor D, as indicated.

3 G is the minor friction-drum,whicl1 is made of any suitable material and is secured on the counter-shaft g. The counter-shaft g is journaled at the ends in the sleeves g, which are provided with arms 9 as indicated.

It will be seen from what I have hereinbefore described that the cross-shaft g is journaled inadjustable or hung bearings.
' The operation of the apparatus is as follows: In order to cause the driving-shaft F arrow the friction-drum G is removed from contact with the friction-drum E, and thereby the drive of the drum E, and consequently the shaft F, is thrown out, and by continuing the movement of the lever in the reverse direction the brake-shoe J is thrown against the drum E, so as to retard the speed of rotation or impetus of the drum and bring it to a stop, thereby stopping the rotation of the shaft F. It will thus be seen that by the simple movement of the lever H in either one direction or the other the shaft F may be driven, retarded, or stopped.
As the shaft g is journaled in thesleeves g and the shaft is connected by the arm I to a spindle or stud axially on a line with the center of the shaft of the motor D, it will be seen that the friction gear or drum G maybe thrown into or out of gear with the drum E without disturbing the driving connection between the gear-wheel g and the gearpinion on the motor-shaft D, as such gear-wheel 9 will roll upon the gear-pinion D on account of the aforesaid connection by the arm I, and therefore the driving-gear will be always in mesh, which is an important desideratum in an apparatus of this class, as danger of breakage of the gears is reduced to a minimum.
Another important advantage I obtain in the construction of my apparatus is that the brake cannot be thrown in except when the driving-gear is thrown on t, which also serves to prevent breakages.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. In an apparatus for operating and controlling gates or opening bridges, the combination with a frame, motor and driving-shaft thereof and the friction-drum and driving mechanism operated from same, of a coacting drum adjustably held against the afore said drum supported independently of the driving-shaft, a driving means between such adjustable drum and the motor-shaft and means for adjusting the aforesaid drum Without disturbing the position of the driving means as and for the purpose specified.
2. In an apparatus for operating and controllinggates oropeningbridges,the combination with the frame, motor and driving-shaft thereof and the friction-drum and shaft thereof supported in suitable hearings in the frame, of a coacting drum and the shaft thereof, bearings for the shaft hung from the frame, a gear on the end of the shaft deriving movement from the gear on the motorshaft, means for raising the coacting drum from contact with the main drum and further means for holding the drum-shaft in a concentric relation to the motor-shaft as and for the purpose specified.
3. In an apparatus for operating and controlling gates or opening bridges,the combination with the frame, motorand driving-shaft thereof and the friction-drum and shaft thereof supported in suitable hearings in the frame, of a coacting drum and the shaft thereof, bearings for the shafthung from the frame, a gear on the end of the shaft deriving movement from the gear on the motorshaft, means for raising the coacting drum from contact with the main drum, an arm pivoted on a stud or spindle axially opposite the motor-shaft, said arm having an opening holding the shaft in a concentric relation to the motorshaft, so as to always hold the gear in mesh as and for the purpose specified.
5. In an apparatus for operating and controlling gates or opening bridges, the combination with the frame, motor and drivingshaft thereof and the friction-drum and shaft thereof supported in suitable bearings in the frame, of a coacting drum and the shaft thereof, bearings for the shaft hung from the frame, a gear-wheel on the end of the shaft, a gear-pinion on the end of the motor-shaft with which such gear meshes and an arm pivoted axially opposite the motor-shaft, said arm having an opening throughwhich the shaft of the coacting gear extends as and for the purpose specified.
6. The combination with the frame, motor and driving-shaft thereof and the frictiondrum and shaft thereof supported in suitable bearings in the frame,of a coacting drum and the shaft thereof, sleeve-bearings for the shaft provided with arms, a supporting-shaft journaled in suitable bearings in the frame, arms on the shaft, links connecting such arms with the arms on the sleeve-bearings and a lever for turning the shaft and driving.

The combination with the frame, motor and driving-shaft thereof and the frictiondrum and shaft thereof supported in suitable hearings in the frame, of a coacting drum and the shaft thereof, sleeve-bearings for the shaft provided with arms, a supporting-shaft journaled in suitable hearings in the frame, arms on the shaft, links connecting such arms with the arms on the sleeve-bearings and a lever for turning the shaft, and a gear-wheel on the coacting-drum shaft and a gear-pinion on the end of the motor-shaft with which the same meshes as and for the purpose specified.
8. The combination with the frame, motor and driving-shaft thereof and the frictiondrum and shaft thereof supported in suitable bearings in the frame, of a coacting drum and the shaft thereof, sleeve bearings for the shaft provided with arms, a supporting-shaft journaled in suitable hearings in the frame, arms on the shaft, links connecting such arms with the arms on the sleeve-bearings, a lever for turning the shaft, and a gear-wheel on the enacting-drum shaft and a gear-pinion on the too ' has movement about the axis of the other as and for the purpose specified.
10. The combination with the main drum and coacting drum and the bearing-sleeves and arms forming part of the same, of the cross-shaft, arms and links connecting them with thearnis on the sleeves, an arm eXtending from the opposite'side of the'cross-shaft,
a brake-shoe and link connecting'it with theaforesaid arm and means for rocking the shaft as and for the purpose specified.
11. In combination, a main drum, a coacting drum and brake-shoe to act on the main drum,a shaft, means 'for operating the said shaft and connections extending therefrom in opposite directions for moving the brakeshoe and coacting drum in opposite directions in relation to the main drum, substantially as described.
