f 'IMPROVED WASHING MACHINE.
'lge Samui: raum tu in 'tlgrsr frttas yitrnt mit mating putt nt tigt smite.
T0 ALL WHOM 1T MAY CONCERN:
Bc it known that I, HENRY S.V,F0RNEY, of the city and county of Baltimore, and State ofl Maryland, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Washing Machines; and I do h ereby declare the following tol be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part ot' this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a vertical' section through the machine, showing the gearingfpartly in elevation and partly in section.
Figure 2 represents a section through a portion of the machine, and taken at right angles to-that shown in tig. 1. l V
Figure 3 represents a section taken through the bevel pinion and' shaft at the red line a: n.; of tig. 1.
Similar letters of reference, whore they occur in the separate figures, denote like parts in all the drawings.
In using metallic gearing in washing machines, the tub or box of which is made of wood, and the' gearing attached tothe lid thereof, it is found that the swelling, shrinking, or warping ofithenvood, on account of its frequent contact or saturation with hot and. cold water, cramps the gearing', or causesit to bind so as'to run very hard, and frequently to break down.l My invention consists in so constructing and uniting the gearing and its supports with the lid and shaft, as that the yielding or warping of the wood will not affect the gearing, or canse it to bind, cramp, cut, or break, the connections and bearings being metallic, orl so arranged as not to be influenced by the shrinking or warping of the wood.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, 1 will proceed to describe the same with reference to the drawings. l i
A represents a tub, which is in the form of a frustum of a cone, with a head, B, and bottom, C, in it, and made` of staves in the ordinary way. Inside of the tub I arrange a seriesofI standards or rollers, D, against which the clothes are thrown or carried in washing them. In the head or top B of the tub there is a hinged lid, E, through the opening covered-by which the clothes to 4be washed are put in, and when washed removed. This much of the machine may be made in any well-known way, shape, size, or form. My invention relating more particularly to the gearing, I shall proceed to describe that part more minutely. y u
On top of the lid E are two metallic standards or pillar blocks, F, in which the journals a a of the main driving cog gear-wheel Gr rest' and rock or tu1n',vsaid gear-wheel having cogs only on a part of its face, though they may extend clear around, and the wheel be turncdby a crank instead of being rocked back and forth by the ylever or handle H, as shown in the drawings. I `4 The pinion-wheel I, which the wheel (l gearswith and turns., has upon it, first, its bevel teeth b; secondly,
a web or rib, c; thirdly, a hub or'socket, d; andfourthly, a shoulder, e, the uses of which are as follows: The' teeth or eogsto give itmotion; the web to secure it firmly to the top of the shaft J that carries the agitators K for moving the clothes around against the columns, posts, or rollers, D, and turning them over; the hub or socket for receiving the upper end of the shaft J, and the shoulder for forming bearing on and in a metallic collar,f, that istlanged at its top, and is let into the lid E to form the support on which the shaft and agitators Aor arms K are'suspendcd.` A pin, z', may pass through the hub, shaft, and journal, in, which latter may be cast on to or made a part of the web, and which has'a bearing in a projection, n, on one of the pillar blocks F.
'lhc arms or agitators K pass obliquely through thev shaft J, and are so made that they will swing out of the opening covered by the lid E when the lid is raised up. I thus make a simple, cheap, and durable form of gearing which isl not liable either to cramp, wear-out, or break.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is f,
In combination with a flanged metallic collar, f, in the lid E, the bevel pinion or-geiir I, made, arranged, and operating therewith, and with the drive-gear and the agitator or stirrcr, substantially in the manner and for thc purpose described. ,l
