To ALL wHoM ifi:l MAY ooNonnN.:
Be it known that I, P. H. WAIT,`of Sandy Hill, in the` county of Washington, -end State oi' New York, have invented a new and improved llVctez'JYhed; and I de hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the afi-tto make and\use the same, reference being had to' the accompanying' drawings, forming part ofthislspeciiicaltion. v
This invention relates to rsf-new und improved water-wheel, of that class which ere secured on a. vertical shaft, and rotate in n horizontal plane at the'lower endet' a-cylindrical case,'undernen.th chutes or water-guides.
In the accompanyingsheet'of drawings- Figure 1 is a vertical section otmy invention, taken in the line' x x, iig. 2.
' Figure 2, a. horizontel section of' the seme, taken in the line y y, iig. 1.
Similar lettersnt` reference indicatev corresponding parts.
A represents n. cylindrical case, having within it, et its lower part, c series of chutes, a, which servo to guide or direct the wster'properly to the buckets of the wheel B, which is attached to o. shaft, C, the 4lutter passing vertically up through the centre 'of the cese A, as ishown in fig. 1.
The buckets b of'the wheel are of s. peculiar form, their lower edges being inclined about three inches to the foot of their rcdiel length, and said fall diminishing gradually from the, bottom to the tops of the buckets, which nre in e. horizentnlplnne'as will be fully understood by referring to fig. 1.
. This varition in the fall or pitch oi' the buckets, which is downward from their outerto their inner edges, causes the witter4 Vto ect more` eiliciently against the buckets of the wheels than usual,',o.s the water, owing to centrifugal force, hns a tendency to expend .a considerable portion of its power against -theouter rim of the WheeL'theor'dinery buckcts'ndmitting ot-thct' result, n contingency which. in. a. great measure, is obviated by my improvements.
D represents the gate of the-whechwhich is n balanced one.
This gute is hung in frame, E,the top, bottom, und sides ofwhich, at their inner surfaces, are provided with ledgcsue c, which are 'cnt of line withv each other, and serve as beet-ings fo'r the Vgets to close against, e vertical central bei', d, dividing the opening into two parts. l A
The stem e oil the gato works-centrally in 'bearings'in the frame E.
The gate is of curved form in its horizontal section, and is provided with a. lip or flange, f, at its inner side, to work around the ccntrel ber d, and form etight joint, (sec iig. 2.-)
Ther'c is' no npprecinble degree of friction inv the. operation of this gatethat only which occurs in the bearings of the -stein-f-nimi it may' be easily operated, opened and closed, under pressure.
F represents u. curb, formed of two`por`tions of two `plz'tte'shq'gf, the inner edges of which are curved, form- 'ing the parts of two circles, and the lower plate gY provided with n' pendent ilcn'ge, h, which is e portion of the cese within which the chutes' a are fitted.
The'outer portions ci' theplete J g nre composed of twosides, i ,at rightnn'gleswith each otherZ und connected by vertical box-sry'.
These platcsgy, ilenge t, und bers j, may all be cast in one-piece.
'lhe 'gate-freine E'is'seeu'red .in'one side of this curb. and :idool-.,G, in' the opposite side, through which ,ccessis had to the wheehwhen'required; r
Bymecnsoi this curb, lthe water may be admitted into the cose at either side by shifting or reversing the gute hud curb, end n. right or'left-hand wheelobtained, us desired, and the water ismade to enter `the czise, :Ind turn' or muvo .in the'directicn of vthe roteition of Lvthewhcol, with the leest possibledegree of friction.
I claim es new, end-.desire to secure by Letters Pntent- 1. The portion Fot the curb, constructed-as described, of. the topwafnd bottom platesgg, the Aletter provided with upendent flanged, li, forming n portion of 'the -c'ase A, the side and -end bars ij, adapted to receive the getal) and door G, all varranged ,as described, for the purpose specified.
2. The curved gate D, constructed ns described, with e. iialngmf, adopted to work against the verticalceu. trol har d in 'thefrome-E, scid` frame being provided withy the ledges c c, out of line. with each other, as heroin described, for the purpose specied. y
