TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN V l Be it known that I, FiiEn'EuIcK W, DEVOE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pails and Gansfor Holding Paints and other materials; and I do hereby. declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making a portion of this specification, in which-- Figure 1 is a vertical transverse section of a pail constructed according to niy invention.
Figure 2- isadetached section on an enlarged scale of a portion of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Theiobject ofthis invention is to provides, means whereby the wooden cover of a pail or can may be firmly secured in place thereon, and at the same time be capable of being readily detached therefrom, when it is desiredto open the pail or can. a
The invention consists in metallic tongues arranged at the top-of the pail or can, and formed with hookshaped ends, in such manner that by turning thesaid tongues over the edges of the cover and forcing the hooksbaped endsthere'of into the same," the cover will be tightly confined in its place to close the pail or can, the corenbeing loosened or detached when required, by simply'forcing back therefrom the aforesaid tongues.
To enable others, to understand the nature and construction of iny invention, I will proceed todescribe it with reference to the drawings.
The pail cream A is made of sheet metal, with its top or upper edge varied, asshown ate, the said'can b eing furthermorc formed, when desired, withan internal circumferential rib, b, situated just below the aforesaid upper edge. The wooden coyer B is constructed with a peripherical rebate, c, the inner side of the said rebate, when thecover is placed on the pail or can, being' in contactwith the internal rib b, and the upper side thereof restingvupon the upper edge a,'aforesaid. Attached by solder or otherwise to the upper part of the pail or can, and extending upward above the edge a thereof, are tongues C, which are placed at suitable distunces apart, and are made of any metal which may be readily bent. The upper. or outer extremity of these tongues C is made-pointed, and is turned over and inward so as to constitute hooks, as shown at e. 'In securing the cover to the pail or can the said cover is first placed thereon in' the position shown in the drawings, and just hereinbefore described, and. the tongues G are then forcedinward over the .edge of such cover by means of'a hammer or other, suitable implement, and their sharp-hooked ends are driven down into the said cover, as indicated in dotted outline in fig. 2, and also shown in 1. Inasmuch as the increase in the'ourvature of the tongues C tends, as it were, to shorten them, it follows that the cover is brought tightly down upon the top or upper edge a of the pail or can, and is securely held or locked thereon with a close joint between it and the-top a, upon which it rests, at the same time that the cover is rendered capable of easy removal when desired by simply forcing the aforesaid tongues C upward and outward to their first position to release the said cover.
What I claim as my invention, vand desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The hooked tongues ti, arranged at the upper edge of the pail or can, and in relation with the cover. B thereof, substantially as herein set forth for the purpose specified. I
' FRED. W. DEVOE.
