MEANS FOR OPERATING CHURNS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 660,516, dated October B, 1900.
Application filed April 2, 1900. Serial No. 11,223. (N0 mode/L) T0 ctZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that we, WILLIAM H. LE S ER and FRED R. BASSETT, citizens of the United States, residing at Paw Paw, in the county of Van Buren and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Means for Operating Chorus, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in motors, and more particularly to improvements in hand-motors which are adapted for use in actuating revolving barrel or box churns, although the motor itself is adapted for use in various connect-ions not necessary to enumerate here,
One object of our invention is to provide a motor of the class described in which the power is delivered to a crank effectively in all positions.
It is also an object to provide a simple and efficient motor which can be manufactured at a reasonable cost for use as a light motor generally.
Further objects will appear in the detailed description to follow.
We accomplish the objects of our invention by the devices and means described in this specification.
The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claim.
A structure or mechanism embodying the features of ourinvention as applied to a churn is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a hand-operating lever-toggle and connections constituting the main parts of our improved motor, no supporting-frainework beingillustrated. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of our motor applied to a revolving barrel or box churn. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the structure appearing in Fig. 2, illustrating the relation of the parts.
In the drawings similar letters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the lettered parts of the drawings, A A are suitable standards at each side, carried on a suitable base, the base in this instance being made up of side pieces B B, connected together by braces or rods G O C. The upper ends of these standards A are provided with bearings for the trunnions E F on the side of the barrel D, the trunnion F being provided with a crank F, which is either formed integral or suitably attached thereto. A lever G is pivoted to the base at H and is arranged vertically and extends to a convenient height for operating the motor. A toggle made up of links M N is connected to the handle of the crank F at one end and to the pivot O on the base or frame at the opposite end. Connected to the arms or links of this toggle, intermediate to their ends, are shorter links K K, the same being pivoted thereto at (Z and pivoted to each other at L, these parts forming sides of a quadrangle the opposite sides of which are preferably equal. A pitman I has a pivotal connection at J to the lever G and is also secured to the pivot L between the links K K. As these parts last enumerated are all pivotally connected together, it will be observed that by moving the lever back and forth the motion of the same will be imparted through the pitman I to the toggle M N by the connecting-links K K.
This motor is especially well adapted for use as a churn-motor on account of the perfect control which the operator has of the barrel or box of the churn, it being desirable to rotate the churn comparatively slowly in order that the contents of the churn may move freely within, a too-rapid motion having the effect of causing centrifugal action, which in a measure prevents any motion of the cream at all. The motor, however, is especially practical for any light work, and there are many uses to which it can be applied, which We will not here attempt to enumerate, as we desire to particularly claim the motor in connection with a barrel-churn at this time, drawing a specific claim to that combination. We dosire to remark in this connection that a lever or other connection can be made to a toggle direct Without any interveninglinks K K; but that structure would not be so eifective as the structure embracing the links K K, which socure an additional advantage.
Having thus described our invention, What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of a suitable base with standards A, A, to each side thereof; a barrel or box with trunnions resting in suitable hearings on said standards, one of the said stantially as described,f0rthepurpose speci trnnnions being provided with a crank; a tog- "lied. gle consisting of links M, N, one end of which is connected to said crank, and the opposite 5 end pivoted to the frame; an actuating-lever WILLIAM H. LE SUER. FRED RxBASSETT.
G; a pitman therefrom; and links K, K, eon- Witnesses: neeting the end of the pitman pivotally to the M. ZINA WATERS, links M, N, of the toggle, all coacting sub- J. G. BUCK.
