Description

No. 305,005. 5 PATENTEDY NOV. 21, 1005. I T. A. DAVIS.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS ALBERT DAVIS, OF FINDLAY, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WM. MARVIN POGUE, OF FINDLAY, ILLINOIS.
CHURN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 21, 1905.
Application filed September 21, 1905. Serial No. 279,556.
a citizen of the United States, residing at Findlay, in the county of Shelby and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Churn, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in barrel-churns; and the objects of my invention are, first, to provide a dash to be used in conjunction with a barrel-churn; second, to secure a rapid revolution of the dash and in the opposite direction to the flow of the cream in the barrel and with small effort on the part of the operator. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a entire view of the churn; Fig. 2, a separate view of the parts; Fig. 3, a perspective view of the key holding the parts in position.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The framework B, with its legs and crosspieces, constitute the means of support. In a boxing attached to the cross-pieceS turns the shaft 1, carrying the cog-wheels H and O. In a boxing at the top of said framework turns the hollow shaft E, carrying the half cogwheel D, and the plate N, which is made fast to the side of the barrel A. Said hollow shaft is intended to extend through the wall of said lfoarrel, so as to be just even with the inner surace.
The shaft P, carrying the cog-wheel J, passes through the hollow in shaft E, so that the square end of said shaftP protrudes into said barrel and fits into the end of the dash-shaft F,
which is hollowed and square, the other end of said dash-shaft (marked T) being supported by the orifice in the plate G, which is made fast to the inner side of the said barrel at a point directly opposite to that at which said shaft P enters said barrel. The parts being in position as above mentioned, the slots k on the outer end of the said hollow shaft E exactly coincide with the groove Kin the shaft, (see Fig. 2,) thereby forming a seat for the forked key L, which'upon being dropped into position firmly holds said parts in place. The cogs in the half cog-wheel D articulate with the cogs in cog-wheel 0, while the cogs in the large-cog-wheel I-I articulate with those in small cog-wheel J, so that to manipulate the churn it is only necessary for the operator to give the barrel asimple rocking motion, and by reason of the mechanism hereinbefore specified the dash will be revolved rapidly in the opposite direction from the flow of the cream.
I am aware that prior to my invention barrel-churns have been in use, and I do not desire to claim such as my invention; but
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by my Letters Patent, is-
The hollow shaft E, the plateN and the plate G, the half cog-wheel D, the shaft I together with the cog-wheels O and H, the shaft P'with the cog-wheel J and the key L, and the dashshaft F, all substantially as set forth and for the purpose specified.
THOMAS ALBERT DAVIS.
