Description

UNITED STATES THOMAS E. LOCKWOOD, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHURNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,425, dated July 17, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS E. LocKwooD, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ohurns and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawing, making part of this specification.
My invention relates to a new and simple mode of operating the churn-dasher 5 and my invention consists in certain mechanical devices whereby a slow and easy rotary movement of a crank is caused to impart a rapid reciprocating motion of the dasher, and my propelling device is so arranged as to be adjusted to suit churns of any dimensions.
The accompanying drawing is a perspective view of a churn provided with my improvement.
The churn A rests upon a platform, B,whicl1 is provided with two vertical standards, 0 O, and D is a horizontal crank-shaft journaled in said standards. The crank-shaft D has attached to one end of it a pinion, E, which gears with a spur-wheel, F,havin g a handle or crank, f, by which the propelling device is operated.
G is a pitman whose lower end is connected to the crank-shaft D, while its upper end is provided with a series of apertures, g, for the reception of a pin, H, by which the pitman is coupled to the vibratory lever- I.
The lever I vibrates on the rod J, which also serves to hold the standards 0 0 parallel to one another, and said lever I is provided with three distinct series of apertures, K, L, and M, of which the central series, L, serves to adjust the lever on the rod J, and the ones K and M enable the adjustment of said lever respectively to the pitman G and dash-rod N.
O is a pin by which the lever I is connected to the dash-rod N.
Operation: The crank f, being turned in either direction at a moderate speed, causes a rapid rotation of the crank-shaft D through the medium of spur-wheel F and pinion E, and a reciprocating motion of the dash-rod N is produced at each and every revolution of the crank-shaft D by means of pitman G and adjustable lever I.
The propelling device can be adjusted to operate churns of any length of stroke by simply inserting the pin H in either of the apertures K g, or by connecting the dasher N to the lever I at any of the apertures M.
Whenever it is desired to produce an unusual leugth of stroke it can be done by making either of the central series of apertures, L, serve as the fulcrum for the lever I, which can be eifected in a few moments by removing the rod J from its bearings in the upper ends of the standards 0 O, inserting it in either of said apertures L, and then replacing it in its former bearings.
A churn provided with my propellingdevice will produce butter of a better quality and in larger quantities than any of the old methods of operating churns now in use and with the least expenditure of power, while the expense of the apparatus is a mere trilie.
I claim herein as new and of my invention The arrangement of spur-wheel F, pinion E, crank-shaft D, and pitman G, in combination with the adjustable lever I, when provided with the series of apertures K, L, and M, all arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose herein described and set forth.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
THOS. E. LOOKWOOD. \Vitnesses:
Gno. H. KNIGHT, FRANK MILLWARD.
