' 28,347. (NomodeL) I l r E To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we,ARTHUR TREVOR DAW- SON, residing at 28 Victoria street, Westminster, London, and JAMES HORNE, residing at 5 Barrow-in'-Furness, in the county of Lancaster, England, citizens of England, have inventeda certain new and useful Improvement in Elevating and Ramrning Apparatus for Turret or Barbette Guns, (for which we 1o.have applied for a patent in Great Britain, dated May 3, 1890, No. 9,335; in Japan, dated April 11, 1900; in Germany, dated March 9, 1900; in Austria, dated March 12, 1900, and
in Spain, dated June 20,1900, No. 25,689,) of
r 5 .which the following is a. specification.
This improvement was originally included in our application filed March 26, 1900, Serial No. 10,252, but has been made the subjectof a fresh application, a division having been re- 20 quiredby the examiner.
This. invention relates to an arrangement and connection of the elevating and returning gear of a turret or barbette gunin such a manner that when the gun is elevated or depressed 2 5 the rammer is always maintained in line with the bore of the gun.
The accompanying drawing is a longitudinal section of a barhette, showingin elevation a pair of guns and the elevating and ramming 3o gear arranged and connected according to this invention.
For elevating the gun toothed arcsa, at-
tached to the cradle, gear-with pinions on I an axis 1), which is worked by worm-gear c 5 from a nianually operated winch (I, carried one standard on the gun-piatform. A toothed segment on the axis 6 is connected by gearing e, shaft f, bevel-gear 9, vertical shaft h, and bevel-gear i to a. pinion which is mounted on a telescopic or other mechanical rammer j and gears with a segrne'ntal rack k,concentrio with the gun-trunnions, forthe purpose o1 keeping the rammer in line with the axis of the gun while the gun is elevated or depressed. I
- The rammer msv he worked by hand; but
preferably it is worked by suitable gear from .an electric or other motor 13, driving a vertical shaft 14. along which abevel-pinion 15, mounted on the rammer-frame, can slide on a feather, while theshaft 14 itself has hbea'ring for its lower end that can turn on a horizontal shaft 16, worked by the motor-gear.
Having thus described the nature of this invention and the best means we know for 55 carrying the same into practical effect, we claim- In combination with the elevating-gear of a turret or barbette gun, a rammer, a pinion mounted thereon and gearing with a seg mental rack concentric with the gun-trunnious, bevehgear and shafting connecting .the said pinion to a segmental rack on the axis of the elevating-gear, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. 65
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands in presence of the subscribing witnesses.
