N. PETERS. FKOTGLITHOGRAPNER WASHINGTON D C @uitrit taies 'gamut @ffice CONRAD HERMAN,` OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND. Leners Patas Na. 66,023, dated .me 25, 1867.
IMPROVED DEVICE IOR CLOSING BOTTLES.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONGERN: I
Be it known that I, CONRAD HERMAN, of Baltimore, in the countywof Baltimore, and State o f Maryland, have invented certain new and useful improvements in VStoppers forBottles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and .exact description' thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, like letters indicating like parts wherever they occur. l
To enable othersskilled inthe art to construct and use `my invention, I will proceed lto describe it.
My invention consists in making a new and improved bottle-stopper, which may be readily fitted to the necks of different-'sized bottles-containing ale, porter, beer, or other similar substances required tb be closely bottled up. In the drawings- Figure 1 represents side plu-n view.
Figure 2 represents a horizontal cross-section on the line a: fr of fig. 1.
Figure 3 represents a longitudinal vertical section on'the line y y of iig. 2.
In constructing my bottle-stopper, Imake a tlat' ring, A, with a. hinge at e on one side, and provided with lugs, a, on the opposite side, as shown in iig. 2. Through the lugs a. I-pass a screw, I), to draw and hold them together, as shown in gs, 1 and 2. To the ring A I attach twb hat upright arms, el d', and to the arm d I pivot a cap, B, at z', and provide the other arm d with a lug, o, and the cap B with a corresponding lug, n, as shown in gs. 1 and 3. Through the lugs n ando I pass the screw t, which draws them tightly together and holds them. The cap E I make hollow, and provide it on the inside with a rubber cushion, C, as shown in iig. 3.
In using vmy bottle-stopper, I Arelease the screw l, so that the cap B may be raised. I then release the screw b, so that the ring-A may be adjusted to the neck 4of the bottle` to which the stopper is to be applied. This done, I draw the lugs a together and fasten them by means of the screw b, which at the same time causes the ring A to clasp the -neck of the bottle as losely as may be desired. The clap B is then brought down over the top of the bottle and fastened down by means ot' the screw t, ,As the screwt is turned the rubber cushion C is pressed on the top of the. bottle, which Ais thus tightly closed.
My bottle-stopper can be made of various sizes, and the same size may be used for different bottles, as it is obvious it can be readily taken from one and placed upon another;
Having thus described my invention,l what I claim, is The hinged clasp A, fastened by means of the lugs a and screw b, and having upright arms, d' d', with the cover B pivoted to al and' fastened to d by means of the lugs'o n and screw t, when arranged to operate substantially as described and set forth. i I
QONRAD HERMAN.,
