Description

C. RICHARDSON.
Apparatus for Tempering Steel Plates. l Ne 65,946.V e Ptemed Jene 1e, 1867.
el NH D ET'- "qk V;
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIOE.
CHRISTOPHER RICHARDSON, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVED APPARATUS FOR TEMPERING STEEL PLATE-S.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 65,946, dated J une 18, 1867.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER RICHARD- SON, of Newark, Essex county, New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Oven and Plates for Tempering Steel Plates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, of Which- Figure l is a plan, Fig. 2 is a side elevation,
, and Fig. 3 an end elevation, of the Oven with plates inside.
The nature of my invention consists in inclosing two metallic plates in a heated chamber or oven, and forcing the two plates, when heated, closely together by a screw, with the saw, or other plate of steel to be tempered, between them. rIhe heat of the plates then reduces the temper of the steel piece embraced, and the pressure prevents any 'buckling or kinkin g of the plate.
In my invent-ion a screw is employed to force the two plates together, motion being given to the upper plate by four corner-ties attached to a cross-head riding up and down upon the screw. The screw is operated by a pair of bevel-wheels, and a shaft furnished at the end with a crank, so that an assistant can raise and lower the upper plate while the operator introduces or withdraws the 'steel to be tempered.
The same letters refer to the same part-s in all the drawings.
U is the heated chamber containing the plates, to which A A and B are doors for introducing saws and plates of steel to be tempered. C is the upper tempering-plate. D is the bridge-wall F, over and between the plates C and D, and then downward, through the iiues Gr G, to the chimney. -'I is the ash-pit for the furnace. R is the step to support the screw K.
I do not claim that tempering steel sheets or plates under pressure is new, for that has already been done by hydraulic and lever pressure; but
What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The application of a screw or screws to produce the required pressure between the heated plates used for tempering. i
2. The combination of the plates C and D with the screw or screws K, and the heated chamber U, or their equivalents, vwhen combined and Operated substantially as and for the purpose described.
CHRISTOPHER RICHARDSON.
