the door near its lower edge, being downwardly projected by spring-pressure to frictionally engage the floor to hold the door at any desired adjustment, and which are adapted to be raised out of contact' with the floor and maintained in such raised position.
The object of the present invention is to produce a simple, cheap, readily-constructed and perfectly-operating device of this character which will be of few parts, in which there will not be, as in some devices of this character, the tendency of the parts to separate during operation, which may be speedily raised or lowered from and into operative position by a movement of the foot, and which when raised will be maintained effectively in the lraised position.
To this end my invention consists in the novel construction and relative arrangement of the parts'hereinafter fully described.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which like letters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, Figure 1 is an elevation of the lower part ofY a door carrying my improved door-check, whichlatt-er is shown in side elevation. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the lever forming part thereof. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the door-check removed from the door and seen from the inner face, or that which is in practice next adjacent tothe door", the parts being shown in the position which they assume when the device is not in use. Fig. 4
is a plan view of the door-plate forming partv of the device.
In the practice of my invention I construct abracket or plate A, provided with two screwholes ct, through which it is secured to a door, immediately above the lower edge thereof, by
means of screws a. Upon the outer face of l this plate A is a horizontal loop or block B, provided with a longitudinal slot b, passing vertically therethrough. Upon the end A of the plate, which in practice is nearest to the hinge of the door, is a stud or post c, provided with a notch c. At the opposite end of the plate A the edge thereof is formed into a curved bearing-face A2, the projection ot' which increases upwardly to a certain point and then decreases to form a notch or recess A3.
Pivotally mounted upon the plate A is a .lever C, u pon the upper surface of which is formed a rearwardly-curved segmental projection or hook D, which is passed upwardly through the loop B of the plate A from beneath, being of a diameter to work or slide longitudinally in the slot b of said loop and l the rear or free end D' whereof ranges approximately parallel with the lever, so that this hook or projection serves positively to hold the lever from dropping out of the loop when the parts are in either the position shown in Fig. l or that shown in Fig. 3. The forward 'endof the lever C, or that which is nearest to the free or latch portion of the door, is formed with a vertical recess d, in which is secured a rubber plug d. The main body of the lever is longitudinally grooved in its under surface to receive therein a spiral spring E, one end of which clasps the notched portion of the post c upon the plate A and the other end of which is connected with the lever B by engaging a cross-bar e, formedbetween two apertures e',
which extend vertically through the lever. The spring is of such length as to be extended in either position of the parts shown in Fig. 1 or Fig. 3, so that'its normal tendency is to depress the forward end of the lever C and also exert a longitudinal pull with respect thereto, whereby the hook D is held normally tight in the loop B. Upon the inner face of the forward end of the lever C is a projection C', approximately equal to the thickness of the plate A and formed into a curved bearingface C2,
l which frictionally engages or rides upon the curved bearing-ace4 A2 of the plate A. The rear end C3 of the lever C is downwardly curved, and when thedevice is closed in the position shown in Fig. 3 this end rests upon the post c,
The loop B and the post c are cast in one piece with the plate A, and the hook or projection D is similarly cast in one piece with the lever C, so that aside from the spring E and the rubber plug d/ the mechanism comprises but two parts.
The operation of my improved door-check will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
When the device is in position upon the door, as shown in Fig. l, and the lower forward end of the lever C is depressed, whereby the plug d engages or frictionally contacts with the door, the tension or tendency of the spring E to contract will maintain such frictional engagement and hold the door at an)- position or angle to which it may be opened. When it is desired slightly to open the door, the foot is placed upon the rear end C3 of the lever and the same sufficiently depressed to raise the forward end of the lever, withdrawing the plug d/ from engagement with the door, and when the foot is removed from this end C3 of the lever, aft-er the door has reached the desired position, the forward end of the lever will again be depressed into operative engagement, as before. W'hen it is desired entirely to release the door from the action of the check, so that it may be freely opened and closed without hindrance, the end 030i' the lever is so far depressed by the foot as to bring the forward end slightly above the horizontal position, whereby the line of tension of the spring will be passed and the pull thereof will be rearward and upward instead of rearward and downward, as previously. At the same time the curved bearing-face C2 upon the projection C of the lever will engage the curved bearing-face A2 upon the edge of the plate A, and as the face CZ rides upon the upwardly-directed face A2 there will be a slight longitudinal forward movement of the lever C and like tension of the spring E until when the face C2 has reached the inwardly-directed face A3 of the plate the spring will draw the lever an equally-slight amount rearwardly, thereby eifectually locking the lever in the raised position. It is to be noted that the loose or longitudinally-slidable connection of the hook D with the loop B permits this movement of the lever and consequent. locking in this manner.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A door-check, comprisinga plate adapted to be secured to the door and provided with a bearing; a lever slidably mounted in said bearing whereby it is capable of slight longitudinal movement; a spring connected with the said lever and the said plate to normally depress the lever; locking means upon the said lever and the said plate, whereby when the lever is raised in its slidable bearing toa certain position, the lever will be held in the raised position through the tension of the spring.
2. A door-check, comprising a plate adapted to be secured toV the door, a lever pivotally mounted therein, a spring connected with said lever and said plate to normally depress the lever, a curved bearing-face upon the for- Ward edge of the door-plate or that nearest to the holding end of the lever, said bearingface being inwardly directed at the top, and a projection upon the lever adapted to ride upon said curved face, whereby when the lever is raised to a certain position, it will he maintained in such raised position through the tension of the spring.
8. A door-check, comprising a plate adapted to be secured upon the door and provided with a bearing; a lever connected with said plate and provided with an integral projection which positively engages the bearing to be thereby retained against detachment from the door-plate and which is longitudinally slidable in said bearing; a spring connected with the said lever and with the door-plate whereby to maintain the lever normally depressed,and by which when the leveris raised, it is maintained in such raised position; the said lever and the said plate being provided with bearingfaces adapted mutually to engage when the lever is raised.
4. A door-check, comprisinga plate adapted to Abe secu red to the doorand provided with a projecting bearing upon itsouter face which is vertically slotted, a lever slidably mounted in said slotted bearing whereby it is capable of slight longitudinal movement; and a spring connected with the said lever and the said plate to normally depress the lever, and by which when the lever is raised, it is maintained in such raised position.
5. A door-check, comprising a plate adapted to be secured to the door and provided wit-h a slotted bearing; and a lever provided with a curved projection hooked into said slotted bearing; and a spring connected with the said lever and the said plate.
G. A door-check, comprising a plate adapted to be secured to the doorand provided with a slotted block or loop upon the outer face thereof; a lever provided with an upwardlyprojecting hook engaging said slotted block or loop and slidably mounted therein, whereby the lever is capable of slight longitudinal movement; a spring connected with the said level' and said plate to normally depress the lever; the said plate and the said lever having mutually-engaging bearing-faces adapted to be interlocked by the spring when the lever is raised to a certain position.
